So I picked up this little astro van with a cds 4.2 in it and am slowly bringing it up to spec. It wasn't producing a lot of heat initially so I back flushed the cooling system and heat exchangers. I have a pair of extra heat exchangers from an old cds and am wondering if it would be beneficial to add one or both to the existing system. I know it won't give me higher heat but am thinking it will sustain more heat through a large flow tool like a zipper. Any thoughts?

Three tube-type exchangers is usually the max for that unit, or two tubes and an exhaust exchanger for higher heat. Probably not needed unless you plan on cleaning high grunge commercial carpet without using any prescrub or rotary extraction.

I know nothing of the unit you're running.

But what flow tool are you running on it?

Would slightly upping the flow give you more of the heat its already making?

Normally, these units run a 6 flow but it couldn't keep up at first. Now that I have flushed everything, it's better but thinking it will run out of heat using a zipper or rotary tool. I will try Bryan's advice and try adding the third exchanger and see how it goes. If I remember right, I believe hydramaster had a 3rd exchanger on some units as an option.

I had an old Dodge with 3 exchangers in it. I found out that like he said most have only 2. 3 is not very common. I could not tell a difference between 2 and 3.

Temperature will be the same. I am hoping I can stay on the trigger longer with tools like the Zipper and rotovac and still maintain the same heat

Today I was getting 205 at the truck. Getting better now that all the gunk is cleaned out.
Another option Ron, go to HD, and get the 6’ long, foam pipe insulation. Run that from the truck to the door. You’d be surprised at the heat gain. Especially if your running Goodyear type hose. I run it on all jobs longer than 150’. From the truck to the door. Sometimes even 20-30’ in on commercial. It gives me a 8-10 degree increase ATW. Every bit helps. Just try it, they are like 2$....

And more instant heat on long runs. I’m ordering some Cobb’s. I’ll let you know how it works.
