Just like Rick's group on the Walking Dead. Once they got into a semi stable situation, they became targets. Somebody always wants what you got.

Nothing to do with religious beliefs or a zombie apocalypse, everything to do with the fact that natural disasters occur regularly here and now.

When a disaster strikes, everyone in the congregation is checked on and we make sure everyone is ok and has what they need. Big difference in taking care of a hundred members that are completely unprepared and are in danger of starving, freezing to death or dying of dehydration versus everyone being prepared with enough to keep them warm and healthy for a while. If I am unprepared I need help, if I am prepared I'm not a burden and can help others.

Since you moved her so far from civilization she is probably thinking about these things herself.
Our Church encourages preparedness as well. Most Members have 3 months supply of food and water...and financial reserves.
Many have a larger supply of whatever and are prepared to help their neighbors if it really hits the fan.
This is not new stuff for us.

here's the deal, all you survival goobs aint going to be defending your castles with your handfuls of ammo with you at the door and your wife or teenagers covering the back door.

IF and when the shit hits the fan you have a just a few hours to go hide your ass deeeeeep in the woods. You'll need to to need to survive on what ever is in your back back and what you can forage. Don't be shooting any guns to catch dinner, you'll just be making yourself known.

Let the rest sort themselves out, then poke your head out and find your fellow true survivalists and rebuild.

    any deep woods in Kansas?

Low population and lots of rolling prairie. It's easy to hide in but food would be a bit more difficult.
    Lotsa feild mice and groundhogs.

Gotta know your surroundings and where you are headed.

Medicine is very important also. Pepto bismal will be a must until your food supply is stable and you find the right weeds to eat.

The biggest challenge will be to survive without fossil fuel and electricity I would think.

Yep but what's the point. The air is what will kill everyone with no way to filter or process it.

The place is going to radioactive for 100's of years. Save yourself some time hoarding. You just need enough bullet to shoot those you love and then yourself.

Hopefully, someone's got some dairy cows. Bacon cheeseburgers, that's all I need.
