CRB'S are a great tool to have, I bought a 15inch about a year ago and love it. But lets not forget a 175 rotary, another great tool to have and a lot less $$$ too, also a good idea to have a solution tank mounted on the 175 and get a good carpet brush to while your at it.

I have both a small 175 with a tank,, and a CRB that has solution tanks.
I find myself leaning toward the the 175 a little more.
On the 175 I use a brush and not pads.

175 is damn cheap and a versatile tool. You can find a decent one for a couple hundred dollars on Craigslist.

If you clean a lot of "Pits" I'd get an RE. Hard to compare wand cleaning with what an RE can do.

We rake before vacuuming and rake in our pre-spray so we are looking at getting either a 10" or 15" CRB for each truck to use instead of raking. I know a 10" would be great for stairs but I think we are going to go with a 15" I heard it will still be small enough for stairs and when we get into wide open areas we can get the job done. We have 17" 175 machines on our trucks now but they are too heavy for residential. We need something that our technicians will use on every job and raking carpet is hard to do aggressively and a CRB is almost self propelled.
An added benefit of a CRB is using it for Dry powder cleaning on some of the new rug and carpets that people are buying. We have a client that had 100% polished cotton wall to wall carpet installed and we have many clients with sisal, rayon and cotton rugs that are difficult if not impossible to safely clean with anything else. We do have several 20" CRB's but they are too large and heavy for everyday residential work.

Why rake before vacuuming?

I've seen reports that raking prior to vacuuming can make vacuuming 50% more effective. It makes sense, carpets fibers are crushed and matted and the brush on a vacuum can only loosen and realign them so much, there is also a lot of ground in soil that is deeply embedded in carpet pile that a normal vacuum cannot break up and lift to the surface. And lets not forget that almost all carpet has not been adequately and properly vacuumed either by the homeowner or the housekeeper.

I don't think there is any one agitation tool that works in every situation.

I use a 17" 175 and do VLM on every job.

In order of what I usually use on jobs to agitate:
1 - 10" CRB
2 - FiberPlus Pad
3 - Nothing
4 - Carpet Brush under the 175 - really don't even need use it anymore because of #1 & #2
5 - Carpet Rake - haven't used this for agitation much but have it available.

Depending on the conditions #1 & #2 might be used by themselves or for bad stuff I use both.

I kept reading I needed a 175 so I bought one for a great used price. Ive never even used it. No way I'm lugging that thing around and no way in hell I'm taking it up stairs.
The CRB is everything it's cracked up to be. I can't wait for a 10in. Everyone Oooo's and ahhhh's when they see it lol seriously. The amount of hair it digs out sometimes is shocking. It does well for the dog and pony show for home owners.
I got a Google review from someone 2 weeks after I cleaned and one of the points they praised me on over the other cleaners in town they had tried was that I left the carpet fluffy again somehow. That had to be the CRB. I never even told her that would be a possible benifit.
It's about a thousand dollars overpriced but just go ahead and bend over for it

Yeah lugging a 175 up a flight of stairs is definitely no fun, thats why on jobs with stairs involved i'll either bring my helper or just use the CRB,
an oreck orbiter is in my immediate future for those times as well.
