I actually like the idea....
The way I would do it: I'd cut windows into the metal tube of the wand. That way structurally it would have more integrity than a gang member's back....but still gives you the visibility.
Cut 3-4 window openings around the tube and glue-attach the see through plastic which can be easily replaced when they fog out in a few months.
