13.4.3 Carpet Grooming

After using some cleaning methods and after applying post-cleaning treatments, if any, some residential carpet should be groomed or finished (e.g., brushed, combed), for several reasons:

to eliminate tangling of pile yarns;

to distribute post-treatments (e.g., carpet protectors);

to present the cleaned carpet’s best appearance for customer viewing, and

to expedite the carpet drying process.

If carpet grooming is warranted, it is suggested that cleaner complete as much of the clean-up and final detail work as is practical before grooming the cleaned carpet.

Whats the logic on waiting as long as possible to groom, I've never heard that before...

Probably so you're not walking over the freshly groomed carpet.

With an understanding that I recommend carpet grooming, has anyone actually proven that carpet dries more quickly when groomed?

I hope it does; I'm just concerned that this is MUS.

I don't think it's an easily measured amount of time. Flicks some water into the air and maybe allows easier evaporation if it really untangles the yarns. Probably not something the customer would actually notice.

If you're there to clean 1 room, then once you've waited as long as possible when you've finished that room

On houselots I groom a room or 2 as I finish them

I think grooming is just that, grooming. Nothing to do with drying

Grooming could expedite drying if it stood and separated fibers allowing more surface area to air contact, particularly when air movers are used. I have no solid recall of a study being done to prove it, although there should be records at the IICRC HQ if this was done. Dri-Eaz could probably easily prove this theory using their existing testing methods if it's important to someone.

Maybe Grooming is the last step before leaving a newly cleaned...

Grooming is the final touch. Gets rid of the cleaning lines and sets the nap in one direction. I don't groom every job but I groom every job where I want to impress the customer.

I groom the carpet. I always have even when I was an apartment hack. Gives a uniform, finished look. Similar to when the carpet was first installed. Looks new again is a common comment from the Customer.

I bet Bob grooms Berber carpet also
Sometimes. If it makes a difference.
Even when I was doing lots of apartments I was also cleaning for wealthy people in Montecito and Hope Ranch.
I had great competition there. Star Rug was established in 1921. Rug plant and high end only Clients. Those Customers expected the carpet to be groomed...lots of white wool. Star Rug did,
It was how I learned to clean and how I taught the employees I had very early in my business.
One of the reasons I do it now is I take before and after pictures.
There are people who will think that the carpet is still dirty when they see the dark and light of un-groomed carpets.
It's what I do trailer boy.
