What have been your experiences with radio advertising?

We have a little radio station here in Beer Can Springs Texas that has me thinking about advertising.

It seems like a ton of exposure for what amounts to $375 all in.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a good price. It may not bring in a lot of business but will help to get your name out there. A lot depends on what kind of radio station. Talk radio usually has the best prospects.

There is not a lot of talk radio here, it is a country station that is pretty podunk. I don’t know that I expect much, in fact I kinda don’t want to be much more busy than I am these days, but hope to help with name recognition.

radio in my experience is not a short term return. I did a 12 month campaign of $400 a month, about 8 months in it started returning around an extra $800 a month.
Make sure your radio station is your target market

You need good support advertising. Nicely lettered or wrapped van, shirts and jackets the same. Get a matching jacket for your spouse. You want people to recognize you after they've heard your ad on the radio

What is your ideal customer profile?

If the ideal prospect you are after, with the income level and lifestyle that is such that will hire you for the services you offer listens to that station....then maybe.

But with satellite radio today, local listening among the upscale market is not what it was.

I’d put that budget into visiting and cultivating centers of influence and doing good stuff in your community.

As part of a larger campaign, the $250 sounds like it wouldn't be much of a risk. It does help with brand awareness if your overall strategy is a long term plan. We advertise on a number of different radio stations that cater to a variety of people. Not looking necessarily for instant return, just keeping our name relevant for when they are in the market for cleaning.

Doesnt every F250 come with XM radio?

You got to think whoever doesn't have a modern car with satellite radio or the ability to utilize Bluetooth to hook up their phone to listen to podcasts a music playlist or a weather channel, can they really afford to have their carpets cleaned let alone by a premium cleaner $uch as yourself?

Check the nielsen ratings and see what their their listenership has been the past few seasons. Does your target demographic listen to that station?

Do they have any sister or affiliate stations under their corporate umbrella that are also doing a similar promotion during that time?

What exactly is a "spotlight"? How long is it?

What times are your 30 second spots in may being aired?

How many other sponsors are being mentioned?

Are any of the other sponsors your competitors?

The big picture is that radio is considered to be a long term campaign to be effective. Never have I talked to anyone in advertising that said otherwise. Is two months even enough to make it worthwhile?

What kind of production are they investing? Is it a comedic skit with sound effects, or just a laundry list of services. Are they asking you to voice it yourself?

Our local talk radio station has monotone mechanic shop commercial that comes on every morning at 7:15 am. This is a prime spot because it has a local news commentary from the host of the very popular afternoon news show happening right after the commercial. I cannot remember the name of the business other than the narrator is named Eddie. I tune out and turn down because his voice annoys me. I do know that Jiffy Lube has an ad right after theirs, though. Jiffy Lube is voiced by one of the morning show team members.

I listen to both AM and FM radio locally. For news and traffic mainly and also what's going on in town. The only carpet cleaners I hear advertised are large, multi truck operations. This is a large metropolitan market. In a smaller community it might be more effective.

But this is because you have old work van that doesn't have XM radio or Bluetooth...

I guess I'm old. Even though my radio does all sorts of fancy things I prefer to listen to radio stations while I drive instead. For whatever reason, I like the commercial breaks even though I pay little attention to the commercials themselves.

I say it's because I'm old but I did the same for the most part back when I had tons of CDs or later mp3s.

Keeps you in touch with the real world or you could listen to GVF and go mad.

When I lived on the road cleaning restaurants for free to show truck mounts, I listened to “motivational” and sales training cassette tapes. Some had some good messages, Earl Nightingale comes to mind. Some were just pop psychology, such as those by Dennis Waitley. Others were “Christian Success Tapes”, like Zig Ziglar.

Most of the above stuff wasn’t much help in the real world, and none of the tricks and “you’re the best” messages helped me convince anyone to buy a truck mount that froze up on the job at 3 AM at -10, nor could it convince the Lee Stockwell types that a real or perceived design flaw was “really a good feature” in disguise.

At those moments, I felt the the guy in the audience
