Advice on picking a carpet cleaner

Hi,

I am looking for a good carpet cleaner for our house. The carpet is by no means in bad condition, no pets etc. But it has accumulated a few stains, mainly from a lot of construction foot traffic we had last year.

Anyhow, my family is very sensitive to smell, and we are a bit of "green" freaks when it comes to using toxic cleaning agents. So I am looking for a good cleaner that won't use chemicals. A lot of folks around here use ZeroRez. But upon further research, they use a pretreatment which uses...guess what, chemicals:
sodium percarbonate, D-Limonene and Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to drink, to quote their ads...

Another company I found claims to use "organic" solution. It is actually a product called Procyon. Doesn't seem very organic either, but potentially less harsh than ZeroRez...
Honestly I don't know anymore, feels like there's not a lot of transparency in this field.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts? Any tips / recommendations?

Rent a rug doctor. Use plain water rinse, no preconditioning chemicals.

It won't clean as well but but no chemicals to bother you, so it's what you're asking for.

How ‘green’ is your shampoo? The conditioner? The soap you use to clean your body? While we are at it, do you really believe the water that comes out of your tap is ‘green’? Is it mountain spring water?
What about your dish detergent? Do you use ‘green’ laundry soap? Do you use deodorant? Or cologne? Does your wife wear makeup? Is it ‘green’?
What about the clothing you wear? Is it produced in a sustainable fashion? What about the dyes in the clothes?
Do you have area rugs in your home? Would one of them happen to be viscose? Or by another name, man made silk? If it is, you better look into how it’s manufactured… cause the chemicals they use to manufacture it, are WAY more toxic than modern cleaning solutions for cleaning carpet…..
Oh, BTW, water, (H20) is classified as a chemical…

It was always the biggest pig stie that the caller was most concerned about. Usually everyone had allergies BUT they had pets living in the home. Piss, poop, dander, body oils but concerned about your cleaning solutions.

We explained similar compounds as in your laundry detergent except designed to rinse better. If they had problems with laundry Detergent we passed on these folks just to avoid the hassle.

If anyone should be worried about what chemicals are being used…you are the last person.

Your carpet cleaning company is breathing in the chemicals 8hrs a day, 5-7 days a week. If anyone is gonna get poisoned from this stuff it’s us

Now with that in mind, you’ll see some big worded ingredients in the sds sheets. Keep in mind, those are very little increments that are being diluted in dozens of gallons of hot water which will get fullly flushed out

So, how can you be certain? Look for a company that isn’t a multi truck major franchise with 60vans in the region. Owner/operators with a high rating over 50reviews will be your best bet.

And I prefer a company that uses a truckmounted machine, but there are reputable ones that have a good process with their portable machines.

I had two custys that had genuine problems with perfumes.
One was a doctor (his patients couldn't wear deo or perfumes)
We cleaned his office every year til he retired

The other was a high strung woman that ran her poor "puppydog" husband ragged

neither were "green freak" idiots nor clueless though

And do you wash your car or your clothes with just plain water? Surfactants are needed to break down the soil in your carpet

If you still disagree with points we made, go buy a rug and just cover your dirt. Water wont do anything by itself

But you’re right about one thing…ZR is nothing more special than any other. And you get a totally different stranger cleaning around your personal belongings every time you hire those big, multitruck companies.
