SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A fire has closed down a section of Highway 78 near Summerville between the Berlin G Meyers Parkway and the town limits of Lincolnville.

Fire crews are working to put out the fire at the Carpet Care Services building at 403 East 5th St. Carpet Care Services is a flood and fire restoration company.

Officials from the Department of Health and Enivronmental Control are on the scene because of the potential for environmental damage to the air and water surrounding the scene. Thom Berry with DHEC said officials are on standby right now because the company housed many cleaners and solvents that could create a health issue.

However, early tests on air and water showed there was no contamination, Berry said. He said the officials would be back at the site Tuesday to do further testing and to get inside the building.

According to Berry, firefighters are still battling hot spots and the building's roof has completely collapsed.

Officials expect the road to be closed until at least 7 p.m. and ask motorists to avoid the area due to heavy traffic.

Sorry to read about your warehouse. Let us know if theres anything we can do.
