Ammonia?

I came upon one of the worst carpets I've seen for quite some time.
. I read some where if you add more SP and a "glug" of ammonia to your prespray it would really help the cleaning.
Wow.. It really really did.

I guess my question is, how bad is ammonia for carpets?

Interesting question. KleenRite's Super X will cause you to loose some breath if you simple sniff the top of the jug. Advertised for carpet and upholstery. I use to use it but the smell is a bit strong. If it's not loaded with some sort of concentrated ammonia I will eat a ball cap....

The question should be, how bad is it for you? Your customers will really love that aroma. There is absolutely no need for ammonia in today's carpet cleaning, except mixed with peroxide like stain magic or eliminate for stain removal. Ammonia boost the Ph of your detergent and burns off the soil, along with any stain resist treatments and other topical treatments. Try using a 175 or brush pro instead

What is SP?

I don't see a reason why 4oz of ammonia added to a pre spray would hurt anything. I don't know what the exact ph of straight ammonia is, but I'm not a chemist either.

SP is sodium percarbonate. Boost all.

Cleanworks, I actaully didn't smell a ammonia aroma. I mixed it with cobbs stain resist powder and used an RX-20.

I also didn't necessarily mean on carpets that are well taken care of. I meant in a trashed rental. I should have been more specific. I did figure it would take the protector off.
I was curious if it would fade the carpet or distort it in any way.
You do make a good point about health concerns.

How many ounces of ammonia do you guys recommend adding to a hydroforce at 4:1?

I use matrix miracle for sodium per carbonate.

Years ago when all I had was a 60 psi portable, we used to use ammonia. Worked great on trashed carpets. Just saying today, there are better ways than "nuking" the carpet.

What would your chosen pre spray to make that carpet look as good as the pic above?

I would use Procyon Extreme boosted with Unikleen 200 from Ipax. Crb it or scrub wit with a 175, then rinse with Procyon Plus powder at 2oz to 5 gal portable or 32oz in 5 gallon stock truckmount. Guaranteed it will look as good. We do lots of trashed out places

You are probably right. Im just with Matt wondering what it is.
I've tried multiple prespray and I usually have to work a lot harder with not as good results.
I was pretty amazed at these results.

It's been 3 days and I spoke with her today and she was still raving about how good it looks.

Like others, I believe you basically added stain magic(oxygen and ammonia) to your pre spray. I'd imagine your rx20 did most of the hard work.

Powermax and a rotary...

ammonia is a powerful additive that can get you in trouble easily if used too strong or in scenarios you shouldn't have used it.

in some scenarios where you need a boost to a heavyweight ammonia does the job but the toll will be taken out on your body if used frequently.

if you have a floor finish that won't budge with a couple of different stripper a little ammonia goes a long way.

problem is guys get out of control when they find an additive like ammonia or peroxide and thats when you get in inreverseble trouble.

just be careful and use at last resort on stuff that "should be" replaced anyways.

or just raise your insurance limits.

If you smell it when you are spraying it you used too much. Works great on upholstery. Remember just a little will go a long way. No Tim Taylor chemistry with ammonia.

I used it for many years but what I figured out the hard way was its was a major factor in color problems for me.
I loved how it brightened the whites in designs but if it aided in color bleeding was it worth the risk?

I quit using it decades ago and have not had those issues as I did when it was a part of the system.

Unless that pic is really deceiving....just about any of them.......

Maybe the picture is deceiving because it was awful. Not just urine but also dark spots that usually take a lot of scrubbing that don't usually yield that great of results.
The property manager told the owner that he had never seen anything like it.
I'm not boasting, I am just really impressed with the cleaning performance.

Actually, I was also impressed that the urine, which was very heavy in places, didn't wick back up.

Is Ammonia good or Bad as well as some of the other Chems mentioned?-- It depends on what fiber you are cleaning and how it was dyed...Make sure You know the difference.

Nick;

I think what you noticed was just due to the ammonia activating the percarbonate.

The ammonia had a higher pH than the StainResist powder.

The activated oxidizer is what I think got you those good results.

That is exactly what I was trying/going to say.
