I know some manufacturers recommend different oil weights for warm and cold weather/seasons.

Pretty sure mine recommends changing from 10w-30 to 30 weight(?) oil if temps are below 35 degrees.

Seeing as how the engine is for a tm(uses water), I doubt many get to see freezing temps, unless running and doors open.

So why change oil weight in winter? and do you? Any difference?

I'll run straight 30 if it's really hot.. I think 10-30 would be the best to run all year, but if you want run 5-30, or 5-20 in the winter more power to ya.

I've been doing a lot of research on the best motor oil for TM engines,

after seeing some new engines with abnormal wear.

Turns out that the current standard "SN" oil is not ideal for air-cooled TM engines.

We use a 30W "SL" oil most of the year here in Texas.

In the 3 months of winter, we use a 15-40 "CH-4" diesel oil for the best protection.

Both of these oils have additional protective zinc phosphate compounds . . .

to better protect against metal-to-metal contact.
