Are APO's generally a forever type item? How long have you had yours?

I'm considering getting an apo in the near future.

Just wondering, is an apo(auto pump out) a forever item? Do people generally move it from truck to truck? Are the parts fixable/replaceable, etc. What are common issues w/them? What fails?

I'd imagine it's a lot like a cat pump, yea it's 1500 bucks, but most of the parts are replaceable. An apo at 2k better last a LONG time.

P.s. It's 41 degrees in chicago on Feb 1st! This "El nino" guy is fantastic....

The good ones are rebuildable. The cheaper ones frequently have a throwaway pump. My old boss had one from Hydro force that was in line in the vacuum hose. It worked like a charm. My current Butler has had to have the entire pump and motor replaced twice in 4500 hours on the clock. It is a midgrade $500 set up. My new set up will be a hydra master with their super nice apo

I'm glad you brought that up, butler apo... It's on their site and like 5-600$, I was totally considering it...

What are you doing in Chicago? Genny and I were just talking about coming to look at the rig. Im really going to need something soon. I may not be able to wait. Im going to look at financing real soon too so I can get my ducks in a row.
I have no experience with APOs.

We have a HM Maxx470. It has a Jabsco pumpout that sits vertical and has the rubber impellers. Those need rebuilt yearly. The pump has lasted 5600 hours and 8 years. It still works great. Its on float #2. The two sapphire 570's come with the Check Valve type of trash pump. Not sure how long they last. The check valves need cleaned out often as hair and lint eventually builds up in them and clogs them up. They look well built, and we hope to get 5000 hours out of them.

I've only have experience with in-line pump-out filter boxes similar to the HF one...

The APO in TM's people say you need to run them all the time or they crap out if they sit too long...

Mine got destroyed because I didn't realize it had a diaphragm that would break. It destroyed everything but the electric motor. I never bothered with it again. I think a macerator type pump seems better. I filter my water pretty well but it still clogged up the inlet. it should just suck out the water, seems pretty simple.

I use the Comet external APO that I bought with my Pro1200. I also have a simular diaphram APO on the Thermalwave. Good pre-tank filtration is the key to clogging issues. And run a clean tank (1/2 full) of water once in a while to clean out the valves. Lots of grit and fine particles get by any filter.
