How reliable are auto pumpouts?
Will they work when pulling 16"Hg?
Are they easy to get going again if there is a failure in the middle of a job?

The one I have(Hydramaster) has worked great. I only wish it was installed a bit higher on the tank. That way I could run filterless without plugging it up.

who is the "expert" on apo's?

My reason for asking is that I need a new recovery take.

I was wondering about the feasibility of making a smaller tank (say something like a filter box) with an apo and have it pump into a larger tank (which wouldn't need to be built quite as sturdy as big recovery tank)

I think that is definately do-able. You will want some sort of failsafe float that will shut the machine off in-case the APO stops moving the water, and also if your other waste tank was full. I think if a guy had one made vertically in the 20 gallon range, you could maximize it well for vacuum pressure and airflow.
