I'm back to work on Friday. I've been answering my phone while I'm on vacation and I am fully booked to the end of August and actually passing some jobs to a couple of guys I work with sometimes. I get asked by new guys sometimes, "where do you get your customers"? Customers are everywhere. You have to let people know who you are, everywhere you go. I used to always wear uniform shirts, lettered hoodies or jackets. Always had a nicely lettered van. People stop me and ask, "are you a carpet cleaner"? Duh, what was your first clue? One of my good customers was a lady who was behind me at a cashier line up, when the cashier called for a price check. We all collectively groaned and realized we would be here for a few more minutes. This lady asked what I charge for carpet cleaning and I had a good conversation with her about methods and prices. She booked me to clean her home. Turns out she was a real estate agent and she booked a ton of work with me over the years. She is passed away now but I still clean her home for her son, who is an upholstery designer. He refers me often to his clients. I had another one who I have a pen to on a ferry. He had 2 dogs and wanted to know about urine treatment. Been my customer for over 15 years. Customers are all around you. You have to be obvious and friendly. Have a quick smile and be willing to talk to people. That's all it really takes. I do very little advertising now but I am still picking up new customers.
