Have a customer laying carpet in basement.

Carpet store gave them Frize 100% Polyester sample and said it was a good choice for basement. They also said that in basements they are starting to recommend no pad...either glue down or tack down....they said though you shouldn't really wet clean it just tacked down with no pad...and that they should glue it down...

is this valid or what??

did they recommend the poly cuz it's the most mildew proof or what??
and what's with the tacking vs glueing and its cleanability?

Re: Cleanability of basement carpet..tacked down vs glued do

Sounds like B.S. to me.

Good quality carpet cushion is a necessity when it comes to the life of the carpet. Crappy polyester or not. If you have any kind of traffic on the carpet on a glue down frize polyester it's going to look like heck in no time. It's going to look like heck anyway after a time :)

Poly will have no difference in being mold/mildew proof. Keep in mind that mold needs organic material to grow on. Nylon carpet is technically mold/mildew proof as well it's synthetic fiber. Mold is going to use the organic material, i.e. dirt, in the carpet to grow on.

Because it's poly is a moot point.

Installation is more of a pain with a stretched in install in a basement just because of the installation of the tack-less strip. You have to hammer drill and use special concrete nails to properly install tack-less on concrete.

Clean-ability with no pad. Makes no difference unless your not properly cleaning it.

Sounds like an uneducated carpet salesman that had heard bits and pieces of info and is regurgitating it based on his limited understanding.

Educate your customer and be the expert :)

Some of the better woven polyester carpets seem to hold up well, but usually a polyester carpet will be chosen only because it will be a cheap option. Tack down with no pad is new to me and if they tell the customer you can't wet clean it this is probably the installation they sell for $10 a room.

No pad will cause the face fiber to compress faster as it will take all of the stress of traffic. Wick backs are much more common on glue-down installations due to having no airflow through the backing. Again, this is probably the cheap option.

You might be able to educate the cheap out of your customer or at least tell them to look elsewhere for their carpet.
