It was dry. It all was wiped down dry with microfiber towels and a fan placed on them after the last step of thr revitalize step. There was a couple spots on one cushion that was nearest to the window and sunlight that didn't really restore as well but I don't have a picture of it.

Just cleaned, protected and revitalized with the hydro-force leather cleaning kit. Turned out much better then I expected.

http://www.hyorelequip.com/Hydro-Force-Leather-Cleaning-Kit_p_2594.html

"Hydro-Force Professional Leather Revitalizer protects leather from cracking and premature aging, by providing the essential oils and lubrication that it needs to remain soft and supple. Leather that is not regularly revitalized can become dry and stiff. Hydro-Force Professional Leather Revitalizer replenishes the natural moisture and oil that can removed from leather by time (light, direct sunlight, dry air, heat, soiling) and improper cleaning agents. It restores the leather to the original scent, feel, and touch, while extending the investment. It brings out the natural color and grain of the original leather. Hydro-Force Professional Leather Revitalizer penetrates easily into the pores of leather providing natural lubrication without leaving an oily residue. Use Hydro-Force Professional Leather Revitalizer regularly to keep leather looking and performing at it's best and to restore the soft, supple feel and functionality of leather that has become dry and stiff from exposure to direct sunlight, dry climate, harsh cleaning agents and other factors. It meets or exceeds the performance standards of leading Italian leather conditioners with a more economical price. It is easy to apply and easy to use. It is the perfect leather conditioner for your customer's fine upholstered leather furniture, but can also be safely and effectively used on auto leather, leather jackets, luggage, handbags, and more."

So the lighter worn areas returned to darker black with only additional oils, and not from any pigmented products?

I wonder how it will look in a week as the oil is absorbed and dispersed more.

No pigmented products used, just what was supplied in the kit. We will be doing some other cleans on this house in the future so hopefully I can keep you updated.

I have seen rapid degradation in appearance with similar products for vinyl on boats which were oil based, and also meant to restore the oil content of the materials.

Once they are neglected by not periodically conditioning them, they can really dry out and look like sh!t and also become more brittle and prone to cracking.

Neglected fabric has lost most of it's surface oils, and is very thirsty, and will absorb the majority of a single application and lower the surface concentration, which is probably why it looks so good right now.

It's really dry skin when you think about it, isn't it.

The drier the skin, the more you have to moisturize it.

Another reason to reach for the Jergens.

I look forward to seeing later pics.

I cannot see how colour can be added back into worn leather without a dye or pigment added. ??

Perhaps someone from HydroForce can explain??

@Tom Forsythe is the leather expert. He may have additional and better info.

Basically there are two things happening here.
  1. The dyes or pigments used in protected leather will move around somewhat when the fat liquors (oils) are present. The addition of the the revitalizer allows these pigments to spread out and fill in the worn areas. Even if the oils dry out, the color will stay there except when abraded away by use.
  2. Cleaning and revitalzing does improve the appearance by removing soils. The leather than naturally looks cleaner.

"Once they are neglected by not periodically conditioning them, they can really dry out and look like sh!t and also become more brittle and prone to cracking. "

Just as abused carpet won't look as good as it would have had it been properly maintained, leather that has been neglected won't look its best. The worn areas will show again. That does not stop us from cleaning carpet and recommending to our customers that they take better care of their carpet in the future.

The Hydro-Force Leather cleaning and revitalizing system does not perform miracles. It does not cause the leather to look like new forever. But it does very good at cleaning, revitalizing (making the leather soft and supple again) and protecting the leather. You can easily make the cost of a kit back in one job - https://interlinksupply.com/index.php?item_num=CL03H About $95.

As always, good info Scott, unfortunately, this product is not available down here, according to the various sites I visited looking for it.

At this point in time, mold is our biggest problem in the far north with leather, & we're only just entering our "wet season" which will bring plenty of rain & high humidity.

Joy-oh-joy, time to break out the Concrobium again. :winky:

Take care all.

From a picture, it is hard to tell whether the leather is aniline or protected (pigmented). From the results it is likely an aniline leather with a wax coating. Wax can be moved around the surface of an aniline leather with the Revitalizer. Surface scratches in a waxed aniline leather can be removed by applying the Revitalizer and rubbing with lint free cloth with force which moves the wax around enough to cover the mark. If the sofa was pigmented, then the picture would seem to indicate that some had peeled off the leather. Generally a hide that will be pigmented with brown will be applied over a hide that has been dyed brown so some minor pigment loss may not be that noticeably.

Shorty you can ask one of our distributors for our leather kit. I do remember that Leathermaster had a distributor so you should be able to get some of their product. I remember that they had something for mold. Leathermaster Wax-On can add wax once this has been worn off some parts of the leather. A small tube of Scratchaway (I may have forgotten the name) can actually move dye around other aniline leathers without wax to cover surface scratches.

Thanks Tom, Yes, I agree with what you are saying.
I've found that with the wax pull-ups, by using a warm hair drier, the wax can also be restored, or moved around along with some "Wax-on".
This would certainly hide those marks, which I stupidly presumed to be loss of top coat on a pigmented suite.

We very rarely see wax or oil pull-ups, down here in the tropics.

In Australia, Leather Master is now MultiMaster & yes, Scratchaway is the name, it's also in my kit. :winky:
Prior to Steve Poulos coming out to Australia many years back with Leather Master.
I already had the Leather Master Pro repair kit in the aluminum box.
Crikey, that makes me feel old. :(

Thanks for the replies.
