I remember driving into Carmel late one afternoon, it was a small sleepy village back then.

I think the road was called Pacific Coast Highway (?) had a lot of damage due to very wet weather for some time.

I remember there was this old church/monastery (?) at the base of some hills, with the Pacific Ocean opposite.

It was just coming on dusk, and high above it in the hills was this radar satellite with perimeter lights on.

Darkness was behind the satellite but the church was still in sunlight.

It gave a terrific contrast between the old and the new.

It was a magic moment for me then back in March '80.
