Having the inventory of yarn is a must. There are lots of elements to the project.

Need looms, designs, weavers and tools and more .....

You are invited to feel free to chime in with observations and pictures too. (Please note: There are many steps toward final rug production not mentioned as of yet)

Before there was weaving and knitting, there had to be spun yarn. Preparing the yarn for use is done by spinning from different fleeces and wool types. There are different types of spindles; support spindles, Navajo spindles, drop spindles, top and bottom whorls. They look like this:

And work like this:

These pictures were taken in 2005 and were of Qashqai Nomads. The nomadic women weave as contractors, and their products are for sale rather than for their own use. These yarns went into the rugs that became known as Gabbeh rugs. I have read that, in pre-settlement nomadic cultures, Gabbeh rugs were entirely functional, being produced for use as mattresses. They were made with uncolored wool, and had very coarse knots, unshaved pile, and minimal designs. Today we have them in the US as as decorative works of art and floor coverings. Other countries have copied the design features. (India for example)

Either burning little fuzzy debris off of the back after manufacturing, or scorching the nap down to make a fake traffic area so a new rug can be sold as an antique.
