Keep hearing about the recession etc. that customers are becoming more tight with their money.
SO, when they are looking for a cleaner,
1. Do you think they are looking at price more than results?
2. Why should they hire you over the other cleaner saying the same thing?
What distinguishes/separates you from your competition?

I would say that customers are looking for Value, which is the same thing that they have wanted all along, recession or not, Best work at the best price!
Why should they hire us? Because we CARE about them, the dog, the house, the furnishings, and the carpet

Price is only an issue in the absence of value.

I agree with my state challenged (Mizzou) friend. :p

Value for the dollar, not necessarily the cheapest but get the most for what they are spending. After all if money were truly tight, no one needs to have their carpet cleaned. I don't believe most people are as tight as they are cautious.

The restaurants in our town still look to be doing good business, so people have money, they may just be choosing to spend it on other things until they feel more comfortable. ???

I have had customer recently clean their carpet after a few years of not cleaning. They use to have the carpets cleaned every year. Nothing has really changed with them, they are still employed, etc.. they just stopped spending money on certain things.

Most just waited until the crapet was really dirty

Carpet cleaning seems to be a Luxury not a necessity, when faced with a decision between beer and smokes or Carpet cleaning , most people will take their beer and smokes.

some one is looking for a cleaner, just moved to town, doesn't really know anyone as yet to get a referral. They're looking through the ads and see that everyone "cares" about them and their carpet (saying such in so many words in so many different ways), or they are reading the "bios" and seeing the same story.

How do you get that message across?

welp, I'm not the marketing guy here, but I'd say with the friendliest "looking" ad or web site.
or the friendliest, most cheerful "sounding" voice on the fone...

Offer the pre-inspection to anyone trying to figure this out. Offer it in your ads and offer it on your website.
This way they can get a "feel" for the company coming out.

It really does come down to perception. If they like your ads and website, voice on the phone like Larry said etc.
