The "healthcare" product is similar to Sunbrella; solution dyed acrylic or polyester. The fiber is naturally resistant to water-based stains and it will be treated with either a C6 (supposedly greener, but less effective) Fluorochemical or a silicone protectant.

Find out which protectant was used before cleaning if you can. Treat the C6 treated fabric normally. Oils will work their way through the silicone and the silicone will make it more difficult to remove oily discolorations. If you use a solvent to remove oily soils it will remove some degree of the silicone, and if silicone remains you take a risk of making the fabric sticky by applying a fluorochemical stain-resist after cleaning.

I immediately felt the similarity to Sunbrella. Due to all the boats and lakes in the region my brother's upholstery shop sees a lot of it.

As in other fabric and fibers we see sometimes the marketing people go waaay out on a limb with their claims. Crypton likewise promises the moon and then deflects blame for failure.

If a cleaning attempt doesn't work they will say THEIR cleaning products are required to clean it, otherwise warranty is voided. It's basically a waterproofing treatment that holds stains on the surface....increasing the dwell time.

So, in a nursing home, pee. Lots of pee.

The owner was very proud of it and expected it to be bulletproof.

more, I'm sure...

They say the warranty is void if their cleaning products aren't used? Now I have to go see their warranty.

Well, couldn't find the warranty on their website, but did find some interesting stuff:
  • They recommend Dawn dishwashing liquid or Woolite for spot cleaning.
  • The Crypton fabric is the first and only disinfectable fabric. An easy claim, since they're awarded a non-existent term.
  • I can watch the colored water run off the fabric all day. I'm going to use it for a screen saver. (Kids, a screen saver was something you used to prevent... never mind.)
Bill, the cleaning products may be bunk, but there's a market for color coded juice. ICRA certificants. :icon_twisted:
