Carpet/Rug pooling, also referred to as watermarking, occurs when an area of carpet fibers lay in a different direction than the rest of the fibers. Carpet pooling will often occur adjacent to trafficked areas, but occasionally pooling will occur in nearly new carpet where little foot traffic has taken place.
To better understand the effect of pooling, study the pooled area(‘s) from two opposing sides of the room, paying attention to how the darker and lighter areas reverse themselves as you move back and forth.

Sometimes, an area of carpet appears to be a different color even though there are no stains or dye issues. This is known as carpet pooling or watermarked carpet. When carpet fibers lay in different directions, they catch the light in varying ways. This is like what gives carpeting those vacuum lines after cleaning. However, with carpet pooling, the fibers lay in a different direction permanently. It is most common in dense cut-pile carpeting.

So what causes carpet pooling? The carpet pile gets distorted or reversed during manufacturing. The fibers have a natural slope to one direction. When the fibers are sloping in different directions right next to each other, the appearance of some of the fibers is darker or lighter than the surrounding or bordering fibers.

Often the problem isn’t noticed until after it is professionally cleaned because the fibers are revitalized and restored to their most upright position. Carpet pooling is common in highly trafficked areas and may not be as noticeable when fibers are matted down slightly. That’s why many clients believe that professional carpet cleaners are to blame, but that isn’t usually the case.

There is no quick fix for this appearance issue. The problem can’t be repaired without installing new carpet. At least carpet pooling doesn’t affect the flooring’s performance, just the appearance.

Shading Shading is a change in pile direction that results in an apparent change in color due to the light reflecting in different ways. Solid color cut-pile carpets will exhibit this more often than textured or patterned carpets. This is normal. Severe cases of shading are also known as pooling or watermarking and can result in permanent pile reversal after installation. No cause for this is known, and it is usually confined only to certain areas of an installation. Pooling or watermarking is not considered a manufacturing defect.

"Pooling" and "watermarking" (implying water is involved) are unfortunate and WRONG terms to describe pile reversal . I try to never reinforce that wrong diagnosis.

Pre education before cleaning will eliminate any sour grapes from the customer. Never had this appear due to cleaning in 30+ years.

It has never been due to cleaning.

It often happens in areas that have never even been exposed to foot traffic, often reappearing in the same spots when identical NEW carpet is installed to "correct" it.

Isn't it just pressure that pushes dense pile one direction or the other? That would also explain new installations. Pressure from storage and shipping, rather than foot traffic.

Carpet shading is a normal characteristic of cut pile carpets, especially those with a smooth pile such as velvets and saxony plush. Carpet shading is considered an aesthetic quality of fine carpet and is not considered a defect. Shading is caused by light reflecting erratically off of tufts that bend differently from footprints, vacuuming, etc.

1. along lines of "sometimes mistakenly called watermarking due to it appearing discoloured similar to a water spill"
