I have my website on the 1st page ( most 1-3 spot ) of 20 cities in the Puget Sound area.

Some Cities or townships I have the #1 and #2 spot.

In Jan I started my own SEO program.
I targeted 32 cities.

Now that things are starting to roll I'm seeing a mistake.

Some of these cities I don't want to travel to regularly.

What is the best way to remove them?

My thought was to remove the pages, update my sitemap, updated any pages with links to these dead pages.

What is the best way? Any harm in doing what I have planned?

keep them and find a sub in those areas to do the jobs.

Even if you have to give more than 50%....it's better than nothing.

Don't delete the pages.

Yes Harpocrite. All subs are hacks.

You've even used them.

If Becker checks them out and makes a good deal then more power to him.

To each his own.

You could also "refer" jobs to another company in those areas you don't want to work in.

I just can't see saying "no" to a customer willing to pay for a job...unless that customer is a complete wack job...Hey, I draw the line somewhere.

Don probably doesn't need the hassle of sorting thru calls from that area and having to explain. He just wants the problem to go away.

I used to advertise in an area I don't care to service any more. Got calls from old YP ads four or five years later.

Yeah, I just went crazy adding cities when I started my SEO.

One of these cities I'm not just #1 but also #2.

Call from google searches are really starting to pour in.

And as the weather warms up and dries out I will be over whemled I know for a fact..

So really thinking of thinning the herd. Just don't want to mess up my rankings in other cities.

BTW, I'm going to add 3 others.. Not really cities, just townships.

Just set different min charges for the cities that are further away.

I guess I wouldn't have advertised to an area I wasn't interested in serving in the first place. Otherwise I would do the jobs for a short period and then tell people I no longer service that area. You advertised to that area, so live with the consequences.

Enlighten us all, Don. We're not all slumming up in Washington like you. You are still in Washington aren't you?

I guess I wouldn't have advertised to an area I wasn't interested in serving in the first place. Otherwise I would do the jobs for a short period and then tell people I no longer service that area. You advertised to that area, so live with the consequences.

What it has to do with is slimming down my service area.

I was interested in working these locations, and I do work in these locations weekly.

But since I have started my SEO project I'm getting more and more calls off Google, and as of a couple of months ago I had almost no ranking on google for a search of anything. Besides my Yelp and Kudzu listings ect.

Now seeing the flow of calls coming in I realize I need to restrict my service area.. Had I not gotten on top so quickly I'd not have a problem keeping these cities listed.

For having one of the wettest and coldest years on record, my sales are up almost 18%
April 2011 was by far my best April every!

Last month 25% of all new business came via google.

I know that trend will grow as the weather stabilizes in this area.

The cities in question are really not that far away. But puget sound traffic is not all that forgiving the further south you go.

I thought it was funny...

Ya make it sound like I was caught speeding..

Sure it is a problem.. but nothing I'm going to lose sleep over.

Just want to streamline things, now that my projected results are already being crushed! I want to remove a few listings without hurting my ranking for other pages, or piss google off with invaild links etc..

I don't deal with Google so I have no clue, all I know is they call me on a daily basis. I'm thinking if you advertised to a certain, you kinda commit yourself to serving that area for a certain amount of time. Am I wrong?

Doug..

I'm sorry, I think you are lost in what I am talking about.
I don't deal with Google so I have no clue, all I know is they call me on a daily basis
This comment right here confirms it.
I guarantee you Google is not calling you.. SEO guys might be calling you trying to sell you a service to get you listed on Google.

Doug, I could have my listings in those cities deleted by the time you finish reading this, I just want to be sure to do it the right way, and not hurt other listings I have. Or my main page.

I'm just trying to confirm the best way to back out of these areas..

Doug ,

Google is likely NOT calling you. These Places SEO companies just insert that they are "workin with" Google to give themselves false credibilaty.

At least claim your Google Places Listing
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rlz=1 ... 8495453541

Becker,

You might want to recommend a cleaner in the area for a lets say 10-15% referral fee and keep the listing. What do you have to lose?

That explains alot. I ask these guys to stop calling and they continue to call numerous times a day.

I'm wondering what your current area is in terms of miles & what you'd like to pull it back too? While right now I'm thinking I'd love to have your problem, I can see where it's actually a problem. I'm just starting w/ SEO on my site & was going to target all cities w/in 25 miles from me.

If you had to do it over, what range-in terms of miles-of cities would you target and what range are you currently targeting?

It is not so much distance.
It is avg drive times.
Driving to far south of here at 8am is a 15 mph drive.

I'd rather go 30 miles north than 20 south.

I guess it depends on your population density... Closer to Seattle the density increases.

90% of my jobs I can be to in less than 20 mins.

You have a good problem to have. I wouldn't however cut off any work that was calling me. You have the luxury of handleing these calls any way you like. First I would get tracking numbers so you knew where the call was coming from in the first place. Second I would come up with a system to handle these calls where it made you money. Would it be profitable if you cleaned 3 homes in that area every two weeks?

Take the call and let the people know your soonest appointment there is tuesday the 23rd ect. Only go to that area after you book 3 jobs in one day. If they need the service done sooner than that then you can find another company in the area to refer the work too. You can find a great owner opperated company in that area and get a referal fee to send them work. I would have no problem paying 10-15% for quality jobs.

During slow times of the year you still have this pool of customers calling you. Or if things changed on google where you wern't on top, you would still maintain a good number of customers. Btw, I would love to have this problem and I would handle it just like I mentioned.

Re: Delteting webpages in cities to far away for everyday tr

I added and deleted a few pages.
Updated my site maps, and all the links back and forth between pages.
Submitted new site map to google ( already down loaded )

I guess I will just wait and see what happens.

Gave up top listings in a couple of cities.
