The octogenarian JW local carpet cleaner, w/ stage 4 cancer, called to see if I'd be interesting and buying his business which consists of a 175, a pile of rags and a cell phone number...

No database no emails no nothing...

After a gentle conversation it sounds like they'll be handing out my phone number to the calls that trickle in..

Are you a Doug?

I see this played out too often.

Cancer or not, a business model that has an 80 + year old still cleaning hasn’t any value. A number of guys understand this, and just choose to hang up their wand (or park their scrubber) and just shut off the phone.

It was just a job that gave them the opportunity to answer to no one, and do their own thing. That’s not failure as long as that was the plan all along.

But what makes me endlessly sad are the guys who always thought they could retire off the value of their business, but never built a business worth buying.

I guess I was fortunate my equipment was fine and I had a boatload of little old black ladies with a steady income!

Be nice if you give him a commission on any jobs you get from his number. Or at least make a donation to his Kingdom hall in his name.
