Can someone tell me what this chemical is and what it does?

What does it do in cleaning products?

The simple answer is:

It's a chelating agent... a synthetic amino acid, if I'm not mistaken.

It binds with metals (minerals) and keeps them from interfering with the cleaning process.

It's also used in chelation therapy for arteriosclerosis. It's typically injected via IV, but is also included in oral chelation formulas.

Think of it as a water softener of sorts, when used in a cleaning chemical...

That thought of a water softener did cross my mind.

Thanks Duane.

Jimmy;

A very effective chelating agent (water softening) & builder.

Also used in a prescription form by doctors for metal poisoning in people and animals.

Also used in many food products.

Specifically banned by Green Seal.

They banned phosphates also.

The alternative is NTA which is on California Proportion 65. EDTA is more expensive. Most of the world uses NTA.
