Elevator Carpets

Since we got here a butt load of commercial cleaners, have any of you found a decent, cleanable carpet or mat for elevators? Sure like to come up with an answer for my building managers.

The problem with elevators is high traffic and the people shuffling their feet in a small area. Doesn't matter what carpet your have, it's going to get trashed. Best to have a walk off matt in front of the elevator and regular vacuuming. When cleaning, make sure the elevator is locked so you can take your time. I did one the other day that has always been a problem. I crb'd it first and then hit it with the tm. The crb really picked up the pile and it looked good. Problem is it won't stay that way for long because of the type of traffic they have. A looped carpet might be better than cut pile.

On one site the building manager had mats custom made to fit and overlocked, and had spares also made.
When dirty he would replace and give us the soiled mats to clean at our depot. Good system.

Elevators take a beating. All of the traffic that gets spread throughout the entire building funnels into that small little elevator car. Everyone who works in the building, and every guest who enters, stands in there as they enter and exit. And a lot of soil from outside gets brought into the elevator, since it's normally some of the first carpet people stand on inside the building. So there can be a concentration of soil. We've found that buildings where we'd normally encap clean with the Cimex can require some extra attention in the elevators. What we'd normally do is post-bonnet clean the elevators, following Cimex cleaning, to pull off some additional soil. We'd just throw some 8" bonnets on the Cimex and run back over the elevator carpet while it's still damp. That finishes off the carpet in the elevator leaving it with a very clean and even appearance.

Also when cleaning elevator lobbies, make sure to clean the elevator on every floor.

Sometimes it takes a new helper 3 or 4 floors to realize he's cleaning the same elevator cab.

I've suggested this to the manager. He just hasn't acted on it yet. My one building is used by a huge "phone bank", of which the employees aren't of the highest caliber. 24/7 operation. Automatic elevators.....no buttons inside. You push the call button with the floor you want, it directs you to the correct elevator, it takes you there. Dumbproof. But seems like the elevators are the "gum depositories" for these people. And that gum gets ground in deeper on every trip.
