Everest HP question

I have a 2005 Everest HP...when using the high pressure side of the pump, the low pressure gets smoking hot. I know when using high pressure, the water does not go through the heat exchangers because they cannot take the pressure. I know it can't be normal for the machine to start blowing smoke and steam out of the exhaust when using the high pressure side. When I switch back to low pressure and circulate a little water through, It cools down.
I rarely use the high pressure side, but I'd like to keep from screwing things up when I want it. Anybody know whats wrong with it?

Maybe something with the bypass? I have a 405, have not used an Everest. You do have the diverter selected to low heat, right? I would think without having a cat converter, and no heat selected, it would be fine.
