I'm buying one of these today, I've been looking for a while for something that would alert me on my cell phone if the temp went down too far in one of our vans.

I'll let you know how this works out.

wireless, battery or usb powered. connects to your wifi for monitoring. luckily at our shop we have wifi within range. it can call or text you.

yes, it can feed off the power outlet in my van so its always powered. but ill put batteries in it for backup just incase.
i have a weather temp gage in the van now so i can glance at it and see what it is in the van. right now its 66 degrees in the van 38 degrees outside.

Rage van is 55 degrees, but insulation job isnt done in it yet.

Do you have a backup gas generator for your shop?
nope, would be nice though. but if i did that i would have to spend like $5000 for one to do the house too. would need 15kw one. my house is all electric, and i have zero natural gas where I'm at.

but telemarketers keep calling and telling me that they can make my gas bill cheaper, so i listen to their speal (as to waste their time) and i say that's great, when you running out the line. and they get very silent after figure out they have just spent 5 min talking to someone who doesn't even have gas. haha

Scott,

that sounds like a nice option to have if your furnace goes out. If the power goes out though, how can that sensor connect to your WIFI?

Just wondering...

yep that the only flaw, but if something happens and a breaker blows, or my heater dies, ill still know. no fail safe way to guard against every option.
or if i simply forget to turn the heat on, i will get an alert.
some safe guards are better than no safe guards.

unless, i turn my wifi hot spot (cellular signal, its a little box that you typically hook your laptop up to when your out, instead of linking it threw your phone) back on and link it to it, then its rechargeable and battery powered and can stay plugged in and when the power goes out it can still call me or message me threw the cell network. all the cell towers around here are backed up by their own generators. and still work when the power is out.

Do you have power backup for your internet?
no, i have cable internet so i would have to power more than just my router.

wifi router, power for the encoder for the fiber optics, thats if the optical fiber even works while the power is off.

Your power shouldnt effect it the fiber. Be hard for temp sensor to notify you if the power is out

Yah perfect! I missed that part I thought you said you had cable fiber. That should work even better!

i do have fiber also, but you wanted to prove that if there was a power outage I would be screwed. so I came up with a solution to that.

So ive had this for a little while vut just got to get it setup due to my laptop motherboard biting the dust.

So this wireless temp sensor, its currently in my van monitoring the temp and humidity. It runs off 4 AA batteries or a usb. I bought lithium batteries so they stay at full power as alkaline fade the colder they get.

Ive includes some screen shots for you guys.

I set it up to notify me via email if the temp falls to 40 degrees, and if it drops to 35 it will call me, also set it up to notify me if it loses power or if the sensor stops reporting. Its wifi so it just reports to my home router.
