Google Street View

I was booking an appointment and the homeowner wasn't sure if I would be able to get my truck to the front of the house. I asked her for some description and then it occured to me that rather than drive by I would look it up on Street View.

So I did and got a very accurate view of my job. What a great tool for assessing access to properties especially if you have a larger truck.

Google earth is now integrated into Google Maps and it's even easier to use now.

I love Street View.
It's eerie sometimes "walking down a block" that you are otherwise familiar with.

Just start from google maps main page.
http://maps.google.com/

Choose the "Satelite" tab on the map.
Enter address (21949 Telegraph Road Trenton, MI 48183 for example)
Zoom all the way in until screen spits into Street View.
Click the arrows on the street to "walk around" while you pan the image.

It's interesting to see what moment has been captured in time.

When I first saw street view I was blown away. I imagined the job interview. Yes sir, you will be driving every street in the world in our camera van. That just might take some time...

It has the added benifit of the customers being able to see your physical business address. So lets say you work out of your home and use that as a biz address, a pic of your humble abode from google street will show up on google local.

This is OK for some of you but it may give a poor biz image if you have a home in disrepair and cars on blocks in the front lawn.

I've seen the Google vehicles driving around with the cameras mounted to the roof of the card or mini SUV.
I figured they would use satelite or something.
Go figure.

wow!!

that is too fookin cool
and a bit disconcerting actually .

I google mapped my house .
glad they came by when the yard was picked up and lawn was mowed... 8)

only a few folks know I'm a white trash hillbilly in reality....
Bob, 'Dink and Erik have seen inside my pole barn

buy the looks of things, the pics were taken in the summer of '08 or before .
There's corn in the field next to me in the pics.
last summer it was soy beans.

he rotates it, corn, soy, alfalfa .
so it would have to be '08 or '06

The Picture of my Work-shop is wrong. It's of the gas station that's next door on a different street. Try to get them to fix a mistake you'll see how great it is.

I got a Friday afternoon call to do some emergency commercial work at a building we hadn't been to yet, and was able to "walk" around the building to see about access. I've also used it to check out a company to see their physical location. Sometimes the address would not come up correctly while "walking" but would display correctly if searched by the address.

Google does their drive-by mapping in August. If you want to clean up the yard.

It is real handy especially for the CBD where many buildings don't display there street number.
Another good feature is the 360 deg view so you can see what the surrounding buildings are.

We have painted and signwritten our depot
now I just need Google to update their images

That's a WHOLE month to keep chit straight !!
do you know what day?
Or at least narrow it down to a particular week maybe.......

I'm curious how they do the mapping really.
is it some kind of 360 degree digi cam mounted on the roof as they drive the roads?

They got into trouble for driving up private drives and into gated communities to photograph estates. You won't find those street views anymore; they angered people with enough money to make even Google billionaires nervous.
