From day one, I've always worn clean, and pressed pleated pants, and pressed polo shirt. Black belt, black shoes. Clean shaven, haircut every 2 weeks..... doesn't everyone?

Just nice button shirt with name tag and jeans. Black hiking shoes and and any kind belts to help keep from butt crack showing. I dont tuck and have a red beard and buzzed hair cut.

Great personality is what sells...isnt that true for everyone?...

I guess the point I was trying to make Derrick, a guy has to look presentable. There's a local guy around my area, he wears nylon parachute pants, tank top, and a hat on backwards. I really don't want that dude around my wife when I'm not home. Image is important in this line of work, if a guy wants to run a professional business.

Steve, that doesn't always work...

Actually, more often than not it won't work, after the first impression is screwed up with the bad look.

You only have a chance creating a good first impression- once.

This could be an interesting thread where everyone here, would show how they look like -as they are- at the moment of meeting a customer. (and I mean, no prep work of changing and fixing you makeup and mascara really quick for the photo op)

We could learn a few things from each other and could be exceedingly beneficial to some...

Say whatever you want but I will hold to my opinion about not wearing shorts for work. Ever. I don't care how hot it is.

Tank top... Let's not even talk about it as a viable option. Just no.

I agree, there's no excuse looking like 80s wife beater...

Nothing wrong with shorts in summer but must be tasteful and proper length. I usually wear a golf type shirt with a collar and a pocket. Getting harder these days to find shirts with pockets.

When you're in communities where their rules don't allow shorts AND jeans(!!)...and you become accustomed to that look - is when you realize upon going to the local distributor, how low brow that look really is.

I don't think wearing shorts is professional. I know a lot of you do it including Mikey.... But in the eyes of certain customers - it's not ok.

Mikey,

A future mikeyfest event could hold the first annual "carpet cleaner makeover".

First day: attendees could vote on who they think deserves the makeover and select a guy. A stylist could be on hand to evaluate and take measurements.

Second day: lucky guy will receive a shave (get rid of the 1979 pedo mustache) get an up to date haircut (if applicable, as in, the guy doesn't already have a shaved head)
Receive a set of new shirts and pants and shoes to look presentable. Sponsoring companies could be paying for the whole thing and be allowed to include logos on the shirt or some other form of benefits if the logos on the shirts are a bit too much.

At the end of the show the guy could be presented on stage looking like a pro, ready to go into business.

I don't serve communities with fashion Nazi's.

My point is, of course don't be a slob but a clean look regardless of shorts or tennis shoes, you can impress people of wealth by knocking the job out of the park. It's like not using a seal a door or duck gaurds meet or exceed the customers expectations in work ethic and quality and that first impression will just be part of the story he tells his friends about you.
