lets hear it guys and gals, I know we are in a great business, where we make much more than we ever imagined, but that comes at a cost,
in order to be great there must be some failures,,, lets here them

Biggest one for us this year was every door direct mail. Got 5k in the hole before I pulled the plug on that experiment

It's not your failure.... It's your target's loss, not taking the incredible offer and value they could have received. That's how I look at it. We DoN't fAil!!!

I honestly can't think of any failures per se, it's been too much of a roller coaster for us because of George's health and my back. This has been a very stagnant year for us. We stayed steady enough to survive, picked up some new accounts but have not done any serious marketing. Too much other stress.

The good thing about it though is that by spending time resting my back and being on the board, I have learned so much and started some things in preparation for next year. Not to mention getting to know some amazing people who have and continue to help me deal with our situation.

I began upgrading some equipment to make it possible for me to work solo, just a few more pieces and my arsenal will be complete in that regard.

Jan 1 of 2015. Broke 2 bones in my back.
When you think of the hyped up fat guy at a gym the first day of the new year , that was me. With in 30 minutes I was waddling out to the car and heading home.
Lots of rest back to work in 6 weeks.
Second biggest failure was not offering a good employee more money. He got a better job. Learned a very valuable but painful lesson about paying better.

"Failure"..........Such an dismal, end-point term, as if there is no opportunity to modify your strategy based on the results of your first attempt, and try again.

Very dis-empowering to label any set-back, mistake, wrong decision, or un-reached goal as a "FAILURE", and associate "pain" to any purely subjectively perceived set-back, as it will only result in increased fear and "sub-conscious" avoidance of any future attempts that may involve the possibility of exposing oneself to more "pain".

The tendency to avoid such "pain" often manifests itself subconsciously as "avoidance" or "procrastination" unless the belief is exposed, and accepted as being false.

FEAR

...False
...Evidence
...that Appears
...Real

With the right "empowering" mindset, "failure" should rarely exists.

Very dangerous word.

Im going to be honest. We are right at about 70% growth for the year. Pretty much everything went well. Only one break down all year...

Thanks Kevin, I'd love to know what you guys are doing, we were sending about 3000 cards a month with Carpet, furniture, tile, and rug cleaning specials through the spring and it really just never got going. Instead we started mailing to our customer base monthly instead of quarterly and that's working way better.

Good point Frank. Last year at this time I tried to reign in my drinking through sheer willpower and after a few weeks, that didn't work out so well; I was back to my usual level of beer and even more. Very disappointing and demoralizing. But in the summer I used the Sinclair Method and over a period of 3-4 months my drinking went down to zero. I am now a non drinker for the first time in 40 odd years. Feels great.

I started my business in 1994 it kept growing all the way to 2007 , then the market crashed , I kept throwing my money to the phone books but they stopped working . All that money wasted on the phone book but I did not know what to do . So I tried to find ways to get my website to show up on line better. Now half of my business are new customers finding my website on google and they pick me because of my reviews. The phone book was my biggest mistake and I kept using it for a long time even when it was not working. I guess we need to change with the times but I am in my later 50's and it is hard to change. I know this was not in 2015 but it was a big thing for me

Congrats Art!

Nothing wrong with drinking unless you have trouble controlling it. Impressive that you took on yourself and more impressive you were able to accomplish it. Awesome!!!

Not being able to find and retain good employees. As I near 60, I need to get off the truck, but finding the right combination of ability, personality and work ethic is very difficult.

My biggest mistakes were in marketing when I first started. Spent $3,600 I could barely afford on welcome wagon. The rep who signed me up had me clean her home and referred me to a neighbor and relative. 7 years later I'm still out $2,800. Also lost $1,200 advertising in a free paper. Don't consider those failures as I learned from both experiences.

we learn from our failures/mistakes, I do really appreciate the honesty in owning up to them,,,, admitting failure is not a depressing thing, but it is tool we learn from.... thanks for sharing
