Hey guys,
I am trying to change out the heat exchanger on the Prochem Everest. We were able to get the three heat exchangers exposed, however, due to an excess of rust and debris, they are not sliding out. Any suggestions on how to remove them would be greatly appreciated.

There shouldn't be any rust the box is aluminum. . Probably just gunked up(most likely a wd 40 sprayer). I would run the unit to see if the heat will loosen it up..

The rust could be junk from another source upstream getting caught. Mine had to be cut out because it was welded in. There was some debri but not much. Lots of carbon build up.

Ok I was right the HX Box is NOT aluminum it wouldn't hold up to the heat. Depending on how bad it is you might need a whole need HX box. Call me tomorrow and I'll give you my cell for you to text pictures our just email them to me john@scssuperstore.com and include your cell and I'll try to give you as much help as I can.

Now this isn't meant to kick you when your down but as a precautionary warning for everyone. The most neglected service item next to flushing the radiator is cleaning the HX'ers. Per your service schedule you should removed and inspect and clean your HX'ers every 1000 hours. The amount of junk/moisture that makes it past the Filters is amazing.

Steel. with a High Heat Powder coat. What type of steel ill have to find out but it is designed to take the heat and the abuse if they are maintained. All Prochem machines should have their HX cleaned and inspected every 1000 hours.

I was able to de-grease and clean the heat exchangers. I had to clean them in place because I couldn't remove them. I was able to wash them out really good. All of the nuts fell off due to the rust on the inner seal plate.

On a new note, the catalytic converter was glowing red while the machine was running. So I thought there was a blockage somewhere, maybe exhaust.
So I put four new sparkplugs in as well as new wires. We have to adjust the blower belts because they are a little loose. The catalytic converter doesn't glow anymore because I removed it and gutted it out. Now I have a free-flowing exhaust.

The machine still doesn't sound like its normal self. It seems to have a slight misfiring. Someone suggested that the fuel injector was clogged. I'm not sure. So if you could please help me out with this, I would really appreciate it. John, I appreciate your help. I will give you a call tomorrow.

not like that,, it was red red hot, plus the smell of gas,,
As Richard noted, THAT is what its function is. The older 405s with catalytic heat exchangers captured that heat.

Of course your machine is badly out of tune to be putting that much fuel in the exhaust. Castrating the converter didn't help.

That hollowing out of the cat will more than likely cost you heat.

As stated above the cat reburns any fuel not burned in the engine.

and the O2 sensor is at the bottom of the HX box so if the cat is no longer working the sensor is reading that and the machine will not run correctly. Exactly how I'll have to defer to TW but it has to have it and have it working right.

What is happening the O2 sensors Is reading rich and the machine is trying to lean it out. What is trying to do is adjust timing curve and the fuel delivery and it never will.

What machine do you have? The Hyundai has a coil pack so what wires did you replace? Also the Nissan EFI doesn't have a Cat. Call in the morning and I'll get TW on the phone with you.

Actually they should be cleaned a lot more often that that. Changing spark plugs and air filter will keep engine running properly. The best product I have found for cleaning them is prochem ultrapac renovate. A light mix 2 oz per gallon does wonders.

It's an older ss370.
There has to be some way... It went in!
Why do you want to take it out?

Few guys were talking about cleaning them, other than descaling I don't wanna do anything...

You should be OK. . No need to rip it apart! I think most that clean them have the radiator style.. don't do anything. .
