the carbs suck ass!

Float was not shutting down fuel..

Took it apart. The float is hinged with a pin.
Well the reason the float was not working is because of use the pin enlarged the holes in the aluminum carb body causing a great deal of play.

I was able to make a temp repair tonight.. but will have to order a new carb.

Smell of fuel at low rpm.

Faster rpm could keep up with the incoming fuel.

I ordered a new needle valve put it in and things were real bad. Gas dumping out the overflow on side of carb.

Took it apart again and discovered the play. Honestly the holes the hinge pin go though are now oval and one is about twice the size.

Hope my temp fix holds till new carb comes.

Exactly.

I have a Honda 24 HP on our slide-in, and had to install a fuel pressure regulator, which lowers the incoming fuel pressure.

No more gas spurts when starting since then.

2 psi with a flow rate of under 50 gpm. I've had issues in the past with pumps with to high of psi or flow.

The pump is not the issue.

The slop in the holes is okay, you need to adjust the float to specs.
No adjustments to the float, needle valve spring is internal.
As for slop of play.. Sure a little might be ok.
But this is complete wear of the holes that hold the pin..

I wish I would have taken a picture of it when i had it apart. I'll be sure to when I make the permanent repairs.

I have it working perfectly now, turned fuel pump on and let it run with pressure to the non running engine for 5 mins.. No drips, no problems. Worked all day to day, not a hint of gas odor.

I know the problem. I'm going to make permanent repairs this weekend.
Until then I have the gaps filled I noticed a huge difference before even reassembling the float bowl to the carb.

Just wear, I'm sure from use and driving with the float lifted and just getting bounced around all the time.

Just seems Honda should make those ears for the float pin out of a slightly harder metal.

I've got this problem with my Vanguard.

Been to the shop once, but it came right back. Maybe I'll just throw a new carb on. Can't be that expensive - can it??

New carb.. $150-$175.

A fuel pump with a to high a psi can push the needle valve up, so that is one cause.

Float is hard plastic, brass needle valve tab is embeded in the plastic float.
Tring to bend it will break the plastic.

We are talking a 20hp vtwin honda... Not a lot to the carb...

Wait for pics this weekend.

One ear is just about worn though completely.

It was clear the issue once I took time to look.
