wanted to get some opinions as to where to buy and (from the guys with experience of both) whether to get an oil fired as i can just tap diesel tank or go thru the expense of getting a propane unit like a little giant.

It'll be a lot simpler to install and run a diesel--in your case I have a hard time seeing the advantage of a propane tank.

Owned two oil fired units and loved em!

I think Adam Hale approves in big truck applications too.

If I lose another HX on my Venturi I'm calling Duane Oxley for an oil fire kit.

I owned TMs with propane burners and diesel/kero burners

propane is by far the cleanest ..hands down
Kero isn't bad, but diesel in the same burner flat out STINKS...literally
vent it out of the van if you buy a fuel burner and burn diesel in it
or everything in the box will smell like burnt diesel fuel

the diesel today is low sulfur and should burn very clean if you adjust it right. you also have the advantage of it being in a separate box so you won't smell it. i didn't have an odor problem with my diesel burner.

that's true to a point, Gene, but "clean" is a relative term

and maybe your burner is different from the ones I run and all the ones I've seen.
When the sun is shinning on them, you can see the blue "puff" the instant they ignite and turn off.
That happens every time you trigger the wand on and off on a flow fired burner

you don't get that when burning kero in them

mine was in a box truck so the smell wouldn't bother me.
his engine is already burning diesel and smelling so why not stick with one fuel. i also liked the propane but few places could fill a truck mounted tank because of local laws. the diesel turned out to be far more convenient plus 1 gauge to watch. i never ran out of diesel. i cleaned a few carpets with warm water when i had propane.
