Hard to tell with the naked eye.

Meters help, but it's hard to beat the visual you get from a Thermal Camera.

Homeowners will trust their eyes more than they will the meter, but don't toss you're meters, the Thermal helps but you still need non evasive and intrusive meters to be sure.

Awesome Richard.

I've been drooling over them for a number of years now but the prices in New Zealand are sky high.

The last time I got a price, the cheapest option was $13k  and that was only about 18 months ago... admittedly through our own industry. Presumably one gets better value elsewhere but I haven't checked lately.

Now that is nice!

I have SO many other things I need to get first, but one of those is on my future purchase list.

Nice pictures Richard. However spending thousands of dollars on a piece of equipment I can't bill for puts the Thermal Camera at the bottom of my wish list. Meters will do the same thing, just not as impressive. If having a Thermal Camera would get me more WD work I would get one.
From reading your past posts, you come across as a frugal fellow. Why did you purchase the Thermal Camera and how does it make you money?

Me cheap....well ok, I am a little. If I can find used at

We have 3-of them costing over $35,000.00, yea my father chokes on the cost of them too. Now days, they are a lot cheaper and a lot more features than our first two cameras.

My father is always, always asking if we can charge for them too. Rarely do we, mostly when we are doing investigative work for moisture do we charge.

The big question is does it make you money, YES it will.

Not in direct dollars, but in jobs won in competitive bids, it sells the job.

Maybe my competition can out dry me (I really doubt it) but if they don't have an IR camera and I do, I'm more than likely going to win, even if I'm higher.

It's the professionalism of the tool that sells, you can use the meter and find out the same info, but there is no wow factor with the meters.

For big losses where multiple rooms are wet on multiple floors it's invaluable. In seconds I can show you what is wet, with a meter it would take me many hours to do the same.

We've had roof leak jobs where the adjuster questioned what was wet, only looking at carpet and pad. Complaining when we told him more was wet, then nearly chit himself when we showed him what needed to be addressed.

A meter could have found it too, but can you imagine moving a 8-inch block across all walls in the home, floor to ceiling?

You guys will know what I'm talking about once you use them, and I suggest you do.

You don't need to have them, but it is a distinct advantage to have one.

The price is down to a fraction of what we paid years ago, rent one or lease one it will make you money.

It also great to use to protect yourself. Document the job with before and after proof, much cheaper than a lawyer.

Send the images with your bill and head off any frivolous claims.

Richard:

Do you ever think of what we use to not find? We did a 5 story dorm this year and found wet walls in areas that we would have never thought would have been wet, and we would never have a found with a meter covering inch by inch.

You can only dry as good as you are know how.

Happy New Year

Thanks for the reply Richard, it certainly moves the Thermal Camera up on my wish list. I think Extech has one for less than 3K.

Yea, that's some scary thoughts!

When water comes from above it can get really tricky!

Of course that's when the IR Camera's really shine. 8)

Yea Steven I think you've got it covered. You can go overboard with meters, we have I have a bunch of different ones that don't even get used much (Leak Seeker, Gann Meter, etc.), yet I spend some serious money on them.

The basics and being thorough will get you by fine!

That's cool!

The cracking can be skim coated provided it's all dry. You were lucky to have the fireplace that heat really helped, saved needing an E-TES.

Glad to hear all went well!

I have had a Flir Infrared camera for about 5 years. Like Richard said, you can find the water or potential water saturated areas way faster. It is also a huge sell to the insurance adjusters. They just love the dang thing!

The Extech I5 camera lists at $2995.00 and is well worth the money. I did a demo for a local Servpro a couple of months back at an old casino turned condos that soaked through 9 floors from a fire. Using the camera helped him find a secondary source of water that was still leaking and would've caused a lot more damage in the future if it hadn't have been found. He bought it right then and there.
