Now the following is another 'Big Rug.' It weighs over 1100 lbs, includes 80 colors, and spans across 1700 sq ft.

Not really the biggest handmade rug in the world now, but still impressive:

Here's another one; note the SUV in the background. There are much bigger rugs out there. I've heard these referred to as "speculation" rugs, because supposedly people have gone broke making them. :)

I think that is the same rug as the video I posted.

Here is another one:

Iranian weavers making an $8.5m giant carpet for United Arab Emirates - A giant carpet worth $8.5 million!

At its completion it was the world's largest hand-knotted carpet ever. It was made for the Shaikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Iran Carpet Company with more 70 years of Persian rug weaving history was the contactor of this huge carpet.

It measured in at 60,546 square feet and weighed in at about 48 tons. The carpet took about two years to weave with upwards of 1,200 weavers working around the clock. More than 2.2 billion knots and using a total of 75,000 pounds of wool and cotton

The weaving began in March 2006 in Baghshan, 22 kilometers from the city of Neyshabour, a village 800 km northeast of Tehran, and two nearby villages, close to the city of Mashad in Khorassan Province, north east of Iran.

The weavers were all experienced women between ages of 15 and 60, supervised by 50 men acting as technical experts who will travel to Abu Dhabi to join the pieces at the mosque once the carpet when completed. The carpet was apparently made in 9 different parts.

At a trade show I met a rep from a Chinese company that made hand-knotted carpet. Not rugs, unless they were "corporate" size. At the time he said they could produce hand-knotted carpeting for less per square foot than V'Soske or Edward Fields could supply tufted carpet.

They had pictures of customers' luxury hotels with football field sized lobbies, connecting halls and stairways all with wall-to-wall hand-knotted carpet.

Cool! If you want to see the finished rug, Tom, check it out on the Discovery Channel show American Chopper, in the episode where they build the chopper for the Abu Dhabi police/fire dept. The Tuthill's tour the mosque the carpet was made for... it's pretty amazing!
