I want to run 220 to my pole barn

in the process, I'm going to get rid of the fuse box that's out there now and put in a new breaker box

i have appx 60ft run from house 200amp box to pole barn .
The underground "conduit" the builder used looks like 1 1/4" black ABS pipe to me.
House was built in '77.
200 amp upgrade in '87

I want to pull all new wire thru the pipe .
and "possibly" new conduit if needed

I have room for one double pole breaker in the house box ..(which is currently energizing the pole barn fuse box)

What wire do i need to run from house to new pole barn breaker box?
and what size double pole breaker do i need for in house to energize the new box??

How many amp do you expect to need? Heaters, welders, beer coolers,...it adds up.

60 amp is pretty common.

Two 6gauge copper plus ground is my guess.

yea or 80 could work...I woulda said 8 gauge....but 6 works...more so if you go to 80

is the abs a straight shot??? you could feed a 1" line....and i think 4 6 gauge would fit....get a scrap and go hold it up to it

also it would be 4 wire total....2 line 110 + 110 + common + ground

right now I have 3, 110 20amp fuses feeding everything.

It's rare I blow a fuse
But rarely use more than one high amp draw tool (table saw, planer, compressor) at a time

I want 220 for the welder
i have to plug into the generator anytime I want to use it now.

i came home today and had no power in the barn...breaker downstairs tripped .
reset it and it tripped 30 minutes later...turned everything off/pulled cords, etc, reset breaker again and she tripped in less than 5 min

all the fuses are good in the barn.
I think it possible mice have chewed wire in the conduit ...I think it may be "likely" even, given the looks of "nesting" material and smell of "mouse juice" in conduit

so I have to do something...and now is the perfect time to upgrade the barn while I'm at it.

i only have room in the house breaker box for one double pole breaker to feed the barn ...I want the most I can get out of it

Larry,

If you want 60A service, the code requires:

Hots and neutral 6AWG - 60 foot run puts you right at the 3% maximum voltage drop recommended.

Ground can be smaller, #10 AWG.

The wire must be rated for 'wet' locations since it runs underground. For wire in conduit, it will have a W in the name - THHW, THWN, etc., or you can use 'direct burial' cable that doesn't need to be in conduit.

Your new 'box' in the barn must NOT connect ground and neutral together, as is done at the service entrance. It must have separate ground and neutral busses. Most subpanels have a means (usually removing a grounding screw) to isolate the neutral bus bar. The ground and neutral must only be tied together at one point, this is at the home's main panel.

#6 for both hot legs and the neutral.......

you don't have to run a ground from the house to the barn......but you are required to put a grounding rod in and then hook it to the ground bar in the panel box..

My question was. What size wire are you currently running from panel to panel.

I did a 60amp sub in a house I owned. Drove a ground rod.
