I frequent another phpBB3 board for Bible study and they have their sub forums on the index all showing with the legend buttons so you can see from the index page which sub forums have new posts.
EG for the Equipment room, one can see if it's another VAT thread or specific to what they have...
Just a suggestion that may help and certainly saves time.
