What % is left after all physical labor operating expenses?

Where do you put that money?

What's your biggest expense in your company?

How many hours do you work per day?

In those hours from driving the van to parking the van, what is your hourly gross income?

Do you do the majority or all of the work?

How much longer do you think you can do the physical work?

How much time do you spend off the truck working on your company?

What is your hourly gross income during that time?

Feel free to answer money questions with % because I don't expect to know real numbers and wouldn't ask.

Oh, and I am pretty sure Harpo has flipped his lid.

I can just see him sitting in "the home" mumbling "50 percent, 50 percent, 50 percent"...all while sitting in his own filth and trying to grope the candy striper. blowme

This has been an absolute riot to read.

Brian you answered my questions - sort of - and so I will answer yours - sort of.

But it all comes down to this. Many BD's don't know the true cost of doing business, and there really isn't such a thing as fill-in business.

Your model is that contain the cost to the other guy. As a single truck operator you are lucky to net 30% at the end of the year and you want 50%.

So I aimed my questions at you because I know what the cost of business is and some of those guys that are subbing for you haven't figured out that they would be better to stay at home than run their trucks.

I'm assuming that you are not using POGs as subs and the the trucks are unmarked.

If they are not getting referrals from the work then what's the point of wearing out iron and your body to LOSE money or at least make NO money.

The JD twins are welcome to chime in anytime you want about the true cost of doing business.

What % is left after all physical labor operating expenses?

Lots but not as much as you think it really is - see below

Where do you put that money?
I am reinvesting it in new equipment and future equipment purchases for a 2nd truck

What's your biggest expense in your company?
Insurance and equipment - depreciation, operation, fuel and maintenance

How many hours do you work per day?
On a wand about 5, other stuff business related 1.5 hours

In those hours from driving the van to parking the van, what is your hourly gross income?
$150

Do you do the majority or all of the work?

100% of the work

How much longer do you think you can do the physical work?

I am able to work longer but I want that transition to take 3 years.

Now lets talk about other costs

Owner's salary
Depreciation
Accounting
Advertising
Education
Travel
Shop Rent
Utilities
Communications
Equipment Additions
Savings for business needs and to displace receivables in cash flow

So you figure that the poor SOB that gets 50% is getting a good ride?
I don't. You should and could do this differently and have far better optics to both your subs and the public. Take less - give more - and you will get more. I'll let you figure that one out on your own. It will take more that high Google rankings with lots of local hooks and a compelling website to make it work.

Your present business model is flawed for a good build up of reputation for a residential model. It works like a hot damn for the I don't give a shit retail national maintenance mafia.

You are doomed to a predicable cycle of good work to mediocre work and a large turn over of subs, no matter how nice a website you have.

Unless you want to do it Cole style and have a bunch of people that have been indoctrinated into a culture that work with portables that think that working their ass off for 10 hours a day 6 days a week to get 800 per week is Nirvana your business model will not sustain itself in its existing form.

ps I'd be asking for proof of liability insurance from your subs. Somehow I don't think most of these guys are paying out $1000 plus a year for basic 2-5m for a single truck operator. One slip fall could ruin you.

When you are out there promoting "your techs" to the world what do you consider to be your unique selling proposition?

Bob you may be right about what you are doing but you are dead wrong about me.

I know you listen better than this.

Better Businessmen than you and I have said that I give my Techs too much. If I give more, then I get more of less....which is why I got off the truck in the first place.

I have to pay to get these customers...each one costs even a referral or repeat. If I give these guys 70% then I may as well "stay off the truck"....or just not run the business at all...spinning my wheels at that point.

Hell, I'm almost spinning my wheels at this point. Always working to get more customers because my % isn't enough to sustain on just repeats and referrals like others....I don't want it to. I want to grow...so the customers have to be bought.

If they are not getting referrals from the work then what's the point of wearing out iron and your body to LOSE money or at least make NO money
Not sure if you mean referrals for my company or theirs?
Because we do get them...but it's 50/50 on those as well.

Your present business model is flawed for a good build up of reputation for a residential model. It works like a hot damn for the I don't give a shit retail national maintenance mafia.
Dead wrong...works great.

My Techs have been working with me for a while...they get repeats from 6 months 9 months and better.
Why is this so hard to understand?
You act like I'm sending low lifes to my customers.

My turn over of subs have been very low. One moved to MI, the other parted ways. I've got 3 new guys on top of that in the sac area and 3 regular guys total here in Dallas that have been working with me for a year now.

These guys can handle $75.00 per month when they are making$300 to $500 per day their cut.
Some owner ops don't make that by themselves in a day.

I've gone on and on...to a fault as you may know.
It's the O/Os that work hard that give me the most hell. Then of course their are the self proclaimed "protector of the 'loser BDs" who insult the BDs they are trying to defend just by doing it.
Hypocrisy runs ramp id on this board....and in a very bad way.

Harper thinks he's king of the retards and has never worked an honest day in his life
Terje get's pissed at me for peddling my service and running 50/50 all the while he peddles his crap and rapes the very people he is trying to accuse me of raping.

There are more...but probably none as bad.

I had better stop typing...most will not have made it this far anyway. lol
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have.

Bob is a men of few words, evidently!

But he is right, on some of the stuff.

Not exactly what Brian wanted to hear I would guess.
Not that there is anything wrong with taking advantage of widows and orphans!
Just joking Brian.

Bob, you the man.
I did not know you were a brother :p

I love it how they get the "he is right" when they are just as wrong.
He was wrong about the points we argue.
He was right about the points we don't.

Kolfer, you were just wrong for making the blanket statement...but I know it feels good to be on the bandwagon.

Sorry, Brian.
Not jumping on the bandwagon.

He was right about what he was saying about his business. I was responding to that. (Also edited my original response.)

And I was joking at your expense- Shouldn't have done that.

I don't know anything about your argument with Bob.
And I am sure you are an ethical business person and have no quarrel with your business model.

My apologies.
