One major benefit is not banging up the side of your van. Everytime something bangs the side, you will get a dimple on the exterior. Don't think "I'll just be extra careful", because that won't happen. No insulation. I live in Northern Ca.. Nothing a space heater can't fix in the winter.

You asked what the hooks were for. I use them to hold my CX-15 and Tile spinner. Mark Saiger turned me onto them. They're made by 3M.
