NOT A ******* SALESMAN!

I once had a guy say “Don’t call me a salesman! I’m not a ******* salesman”. It was clear that he saw salespeople as lower than scum. Ironically, he became one of my best salesmen! For all the haters: Not once did the guy upsell additional “deep clean”. He didn’t believe in the power of Scotchgard, and didn’t want to buy a tile wand.

To be fair: His average carpet cleaning job was around $250 walk-out. This was when we charges a flat fee of $35 a room (deep cleaning included).

Instead, we worked on developing his ability to describe to clients what filtration soiling was. He felt comfortable talking about it. He felt comfortable making the association between it and air ducts needing cleaning. His airduct cleaning jobs were on average $2000. We made 30% of the sale by negotiating with a HVAC company that did the cleaning as a subcontractor. It wasn’t that he couldn’t sell: He only felt comfortable talking about and offering something he could see and felt comfortable selling.
We have all heard the saying: There are many different ways to skin a cat. You have to find what your best way is……

While I'm not certain you are looking for this response Greg, your opening made me think of how people who do sell try so hard not to be identified as salesmen. I get business cards from sales people all the time that say things like "Area Manager" and "Account Manager".

Worse yet, of course are the telemarketers who call insisting that they aren't salesmen, or aren't calling to sell anything.

I always ask them this:

"Are you sure you aren't a salesperson?" ("no" they will say, or better yet they will enhance the lie with "absolutely NOT")

Then I'll ask again: "Your sure, I mean, you wouldn't be being dishonest with me would you?" (again...all the usual assurances)

I then say: "That's too bad. I was hoping to talk to an honest salesman. If you had something of value to offer, I would have gladly bought it"

At this point most of them start to back pedal, but of course its too late. Once they offer to make the sale in some clumsy way, I remind them of what they said, and let them know that I only do business with honest people.

Yeah, I guess I have too much time on my hands at times like those, but people like that are like catnip to me.

We are all salespeople, if you don't sell carpet cleaning jobs you aren't a carpet cleaner.

I think many would consider it quite extensive. Of course we might have to go to Walmart or the Bowling alley to find these people. But they are out there. :winky:
