Not sure how you can remove it if it's "in" the brick. But I suggest blasting the crap out of it and putting new brick in. And you're not a mason....

If it was applied "on" the brick that's another thing.

Marty, if they saturated brick with polyurethane, it will be like removing oil based paint. You'll need repeated applications of stripper and I suppose, your tile spinner to remove the sludge.

I don't think I'd tackle it because of the way methylene chloride stripper can soften your hoses and the sludge can cake up the filters.

Another alternative would be mechanically grinding it, or using a "growler" to flail it off the brick. Either will resurface the brick and both are tedious. A third way is to use a contained sandblast.
