My brother passed away and I need to sell his 1985 Astro Van with Ballweber Truck Mount. Does anyone have any idea what the value might be? (Located in Maryland).

Pics would help. Gary Heacock sold his for about 1500.00. It depends on the condition of the unit and van.

Sorry about your brother.

Most TMs are in larger cargo vans and the equipment is not a common name in the industry.

Realistically any money you see over $1000 is about all it will get in this economy. Where there might be a little hidden value you could realize is in any of the plug in equipment in the van like floor machines.

Take the first real money you see as there are not too many buyers floating around.

The Ballweber machine is more durable than any other CDS unit ever built. It was the first. Brilliantly simple.

He told buyers when they took posession of their unit "I never want to see you again, until you are ready for the next one". The guys who bought them often kept them the rest of their cleaning career.

I always thought the Astro platform was perfect for it.

Truly sorry for your lose, Julie.
any pics?
mileage on the van?
as others have mentioned, those factors and condition of equipment and what equipment is included will be needed before anyone can give you a reasonable estimate

That may be true, Lee, and I have no problem taking your word for it either.
But it's in a 25 year old van and is an obscure and obsolete TM to most cleaners .

Unfortunately for Julie and the rest of her brother's family, it's just not going to have a lot of "for sale" value

Sadly you are correct on the current value Larry.

However it is a historically unique machine and it is a shame to have it go into oblivion when some current designs couldn't hold a candle to it.

There had ought to be a museum for these. Kind of like finding a Tucker or Hudson Hornet in your grandfather's barn....and selling it for scrap metal.

Oddly enough I think you are asking in the wrong place. Looks like your bro may have been somewhat established based on what I found on the net.

Instead of selling it as a carpet cleaning van sell it as a business even if it is just the van. Is the number still working? Website (looks to be taken down)? What about his customer list?

It isn't worth much to any of us but a somewhat turnkey business might be worth quite a bit more than some of the numbers in this thread to someone who doesn't know any better and is looking to get started........

Good call, Fred!!!

Thanks everyone for the input. I took pictures of the van today, but don't know how to post them here. Anyone know?

The mileage is 166,000. The windshield is broken and needs to be replaced. The front right tire has tread wear (which I think indicates it is out of alignment). The Ballweber is the type that runs through the engine. In other words, the engine has to be running while the equipment is in use. It includes hoses, wand, and hose adapters. I can throw in chemicals too if that helps. If anyone is interested in seeing pictures they can email me at juliemclifford@gmail.com.

Thanks for your help!

Regards,
Julie

Sorry about your loss. I agree with Lee that it was a great unit. Not sure why they didn't continue in the market. I cut my teeth on one in 1980 beofre I moved to a Genie1 and then we switched to Butlers in '84/'85.

A lesson for US.

The best carpet cleaning machines didn't matter as much as the best MARKETING for them.

Many of the names that became big were NOT the individuals who came first. Bill Bane ran with the Scot-Johnson design, as Ralph Bloss did a prior design. That's been repeated over and over.

The lesson: The best carpet cleaner doesn't assure success as much as being a great MARKETER for carpet cleaning.

It makes us cleaners mad, but that's the way it is.

Thanks,
Lee
