I had a conversation with someone that is very down... and that made me think:

Is there such a thing as a FAILED business? Or is it just a FAILED MARKETING plan?

It's really a variety of factors.

But, a great company will go broke if no one knows about them and a mediocre company can do well with great marketing. (Umm..... Stanley Steamer)

sometimes a busn can fail if its product or service just isn't in the timing, or isn't politically correct. ie The Tucker Automobile, vinyl records 8tracks, etc. They get so far and then fall away.

A business will surely fail without at least some level of marketing

A "failed" business can stay afloat with decent marketing.

Carpet Cleaning doesn't ever have to go away as long as you hang on to it.

When I went through my divorce...all of everything I did stopped except dragging my rear out of bed to do whatever couple of jobs I might of had.

But failing at carpet cleaning is like trying to drown in the Great Salt Lake....you have to do something reeeeeaallly wrong.

You mentioned the guy is very "down", maybe thats the problem right there. The owner attitude to action. All O/O companies are basically extentions of the owners themself, so if they have a bad week emotionally then so will the business. Besides its not failing, its finding a way NOT to do something.

You are not in the carpet cleaning business...you are in the marketing business. Cant market, you fail.

I would call it more of a customer service business, I stay busy with referrals and repeats.

Luck has little to do with being a business owner, if you rely on luck then your days are numbered.

Every business is a marketing business...or it wouldn't be a business.
How can you NOT let anyone about your business and expect to sell anything?

Which also means it's a sales business.

But I agree with the customer service post too.

There may be a pattern here. shiteatinggrin

Crowly says he has a unlisted number for his business. (even though the number is all over the web.)

Seems very questionable to me as a marketing tactic.

The luck quote: “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.”

This is said by many "lucky" people.
