When attending to a bleach mark on a wool or nylon carpet, prior to adding the required dyes, what is your preferred chemical to neutralise the bleach??

Next question:

I have observed several different dyes also which I would like your opinions on.

I have seen powdered dyes that can be added to damp carpet, naturally, after being mixed with water.

I have seen liquid dyes that can be added to damp carpet.

IE:: Damp carpet as in that the bleach mark has just been neutralised & you can immediately apply the new dye.

I have also seen a liquid dye that can only be applied to a dry carpet.

Thus, the bleach neutraliser must be applied, then the carpet fully dry prior to adding the correct dye.

I thank you in anticipation of your replies.

A reducing agent (sodium bisulfite) will neutralize bleach. You need to make sure it had enough time and went all the way the bleach went to neutralize well. Many times people do not do it properly and the bleach is not completely neutralized.

It needs to be rinsed out well, and carpet brought to a condition that it is not soaking wet. After that the carpet needs to be brought to an acidic state and the penetrating (or whatever you call it) chemical added to dye.
And of course you know that it the color intensity (value) needs to be increased in small increments etc.

At least that's how I was taught.

Any reducer can neutrlaize bleach. However, the industry preferred method is a neutralizer based on sodium thiosulfate. Some products have a slight bit of surfactant added to help it penetrate fiber quicker.

Americolor in Tiigard Oregon is one source that I think makes the best product. Interlink Supply carries their product - 1678-2435 is the part number.
Prochem also makes one and it can also be purchased through Interlink Supply.
