What do you think this rug is?

My best guess is Bijar... And could be way off.

Customer had it for more than 60 years. And they think it wasn't new back then.

Is it possible that it's just an American Sarouk, even though it's too much of a square motifs design?

It is a popular Bidjar design that you see in alot of designs made in India the last 2o years. The rug has a depressed warp like Persian Bidjars, but since it is a Turkish knot with a depressed warp it is a little stiff and would not easily fold over like the rug in the picture. A general rule of thumb is that designs travel from place to place but technique in terms of warps, wefts, knots, side cords stay at home. The colors remind me of a Persian rug, but all I can say is that I believe it is not a Persian Bidjar. In any event it is both a beautiful and valuable rug.

If it has a blue weft thread (hard to determine from the picture), then it would come from areas with that characteristic like Kashans, Sarouks, etc.

Still trying to get more opinion on this for my customer... Even though I returned the rug already after cleaning it.

Anybody? They are excited to hopefully learn more about what it might be.
