Just clean the crap out of it Mike, it'll be fine. Weavers knots showing now are better now than when they become apparant after cleaning. If you are good at coloring you can upsell them on that service.

Seriously you should have no prob, just go easy ph wise on your cleaning agent and it will be fine. Expect the knots to be whiter and more noticeable when it's clean. With practise you can color a up to 10 knots a minute and can probably charge at least as much as you get cleaning for time time spent. It's a great add on service.

Backings do not get worn, Mike means the pile is worn down to the backing in some areas. Even that is really not correct as hand knotted rugs don't have a backing. The pile may be worn down to the foundation in areas but they were not visible in the pic.

In random spots, basically in front of where they had their sofas.

Its a big damn rug, 18 x 15 and I'm a bit skeert that when moving it after cleaning those areas may break.

Will you clean it in place or at your shop? Again it should be fine, worn areas do not mean it has lost structural integrity (dry rot would). It is always important to be careful moving a heavy wet rug and it would be safest to roll it before moving so that the pressure is spread out versus tugging on it while open. If you need to move it while open, float it by flapping it to get air under it and let momentum do the work and keep it safe. If dry 1 person can easily do this, if wet it will be easier with 2 people.

It prob isn't 15 X 18, that would be unusual for that type of of, prob more like 12 - 14 X 18.
