We've never been real successful with choosing a salesman. Although we haven't ever paid the going rate for what it takes to get a good one.

Although our current one is pretty sharp. It's difficult to get quick results especially for a restoration company.

Even carpet cleaning is a timing thing. Call on enough people and you will get some work. Is the work brought in worth the effort and enough to cover the additional overhead. Not always.

the best salesman is the owner. If your to the point where you have employees do the cleaning, go out and market one day a week.
Sometimes that is the best approach.

Hiring a salesperson (I prefer women) isn’t the hard part. Managing them is. You’ll need to consider what tools you will need to have in place to track progress, build a data base and keep in contact. A CRM software will definitely help but you are going to need to have a plan and monitor that plan regularly.

What is the goal of the salesperson? I know sell cleaning, but how?

Get a meeting, then what? Regurgitate a bunch of info why cleaning is needed and you are better than anyone else. Nobody likes an info dump and its unlikely to be successful.

This is going to take a systematic approach beginning with finding out who is responsible for the facility. Getting a meeting and asking questions to find their needs. A “Needs Analysis” SFS and Rick Gelinas have them in their packages.

Make sure you are not just hiring a donut or happy bag dropper. Those are more for rewarding and maintaining your clients. You want someone that understands the need for the sale. Someone that is a self motivator and has the desire to succeed. Someone hungry for the sale.

On your part you’ll need to manage them. Are they making the best use of their time? What are their notes like. Just saying they visited isn’t enough. Do they have a goal, a second meeting? Are they progressing towards a sale? It takes active management or you could just be throwing money to the wind.
