Hot coffee soaked in immediately on both.

Coke beaded up on the Spotguard side and not the Scotchgard side, then I added salsa and mustard, a usual night in front of the tv watching American Idol.

I cleaned it up as a custy would with a damp towel and some dishwater.
Everything came up but the coffee although the Magic Wand Spotgard side looked the best.

After I cleaned it everything came out. So the lesson is put down protector and make your money, but it won't do much but bead up for a while if you use Spotguard.

Hot beverages are often excluded from stain resist claims, as is mustard.

"Beading up" isn't the goal really. How well does it subsequently clean up versus an untreated control sample?

Half of each fabric was left unprotected, that's why there is four of each material as test spots on the two fabrics.

Thanks Jerry. Doing a decent side by side test takes a lot of time and effort and thought and the results are often surprising. But it's a worthwile endeavor as it is one of the best ways to learn something.

Art, how long were these products left on the carpet prior to removal. ??

IE; How long did you let the crap cure.??

Going slightly off tack now, cop this......

I got a job today where a Lady noticed a dark spot on her leather jacket.

She tried only water ( shiteatinggrin  shiteatinggrin  shiteatinggrin  ) to remove it.

The leather, being a raw (unfinished) leather, shrunk and puckered around the stain.

The stain is also now very hard.

She wants me to make it look like new again. shiteatinggrin shiteatinggrin shiteatinggrin

Oh, did I mention, this happened approximately 18 months ago.

& she called me today.

Some people are funny.

hey Marty, blow me

The Scotchgard and Spotguard had cured for 3 days before the test, the various staining materials were gone after right after they were spilled, no curing.

As we await Scott's protector test, as well as Tony's, this is one I did a few years ago.

Art I would call a professional for cleaning...your results will come out much better. ;)

j/k don't let that comment penetrate your "leather". :winky:
I recall I did the first cleanup as a customer would using just a washcloth and some detergent, then later I used an upholstery tool to clean everything out. In the end, the protected sides and the unprotected sides all cleaned up when I steam cleaned. I'm not sure what that proved about protectors, but since I don't normally apply them to carpets or furniture I guess it shows they don't matter ultimately.

How they look after you cleaned them? To me they are used to prevent staining and make clean up easier.

Did they prevented the stains? Granted you presented a real challenge for them with all you dumped on them! :eekk:

Most people, other that sMarty are not that sloppy of a pig when eating. :winky:

Art, some fabrics come with protector already on them.
Were the patches protector free before you applied the different ones?

I far prefer solvent based protectors for furniture fabrics. We have been very happy with Bridgepoint fabric protector. No change in feel to the fabric, awesome bead up and protection.

Who knows? These were discarded upholstery pieces I found somewhere......The video shows the untreated half of each piece soaking up the Red Pop, whereas the treated sides resisted that absorption, at least for a minute. I was surprised how the red dye washed off whether treated or untreated with either Scotchgard or SpotGuard, so who knows? I hope this test helps clear up any confusion people have about applying protectors.:biggrin:
