We still have alot of elderly clients that still have the shags they installed in the 70's. More in bedrooms than living rooms and dens though. Some have replaced part of the house with a newer style. A few have it in the living/family rooms and the bedrooms are hardwood from the 40-50's

So what is the best way to clean the longer stuff. I have a regular customer who has some in the living room only. Lot's of dog pee and body oil. It's been one of the most difficult I've every come across. Difficult to vac, impossible to scrub - hard to get down into the fiber. In the end I just ended up turning the psi way up and running a little detergent through the system.

prespray, lots of agitation with a brush or Sebo, or something like that which picks up the yarns.

When rinising, I've used a chopping stroke, short 2" back and forth motions while overal dragging the wand backwards, using a good flow with a greenhorn

The Frieze carpet sold today even the longer stuff is still a different animal of years gone by. The tighter twist of the yarn provides a lot more life and comparable traffic hiding ability. We have found that a rotary extractor shines in these situations. We use a drimaster for most of our frieze or shag. And Ron is right about the crb style scrubbers. They fluff the heck out of these fibers. and dig up a lot of good crud to be removed.

EDIC PowerMates were made for shad, also good on short cut piles; brush bristles nice and long; so it get into the longer cut.

Mike- You should be able to look at a carpet and tell what its made of for the most part.

I have a customer with some new shag thats about 1 1/2 to 2" long. Luckily they're clean freaks.
