I have the reel on the side now and would love to be able to have the doors open more then the 90 degrees they seem to be designed to do.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket part that will allow to do this?.

Hinges are in the top and bottom. The piece that stops the door is in the middle.

I haven't looked at it closely but maybe it's adjustable??

If that's like my old van, push on that thin piece of metal in the middle as you open the door and it will become unhooked and open all the way. I don't know exactly what van that is though.

That middle piece.....pull it toward you as you are opening the door. (you must pull it before then door reaches about 1/4 open)

Yeah, that thing in the second picture is called the check strap. If you opend the door about half way, you can push the check strap in and then (while holding it) swing the door open all the way. It is to prevent the door from opening to far and damaging itself or the body. It does depend on the model though, as not all trucks had this feature. It makes me laugh to think about what they used to use on the rear of the old astro vans..

Thanks for the suggestions. I just tried it but didn't work. This model doesn't seem to have that capability but at least it's good to know that I may be able to find it. I'll do a search on the net and go to the dealer on Monday if I can't find it.

It's a 2001 GMC 2500.

thanks again,
Albert

Albert;

The center strap IS the stop.

It may be damaged, if pushing it or pulling it doesn't work.

Get a light and look at it on the inside of the door.

Finally, a cutting torch would surely solve the limitation.

Yes, I just did it. I have a 2003 3500. You open the door just barely, and pull the center thing towards you and hold it while you open the door. The door then opens farther, but not a full 180 degrees. It works though.

I THINK YOUR HINGE PINS ARE SEIZING UP IF THIS IS TRUE YOU WILL NEED AN ACID BASED NUT BUSTER TOO SPRAY IN TO UR HINGE PINS ...........I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN ON MANY GMC VAN DOORS MY BUDDY HAD A FLEET VAN WITH SAME PROBLEM SO HE DRILLED TAPPED AND PUT GREASE FITTINGS ON THE HINGES PROBLEM SOLVED GIT R DONE when the pins rust they will leave layers of rotted steel pin material inside hinge . hinge replacement is an option

All your suggestions were right. Pull towards you almost immediately after opening door. It was late when I tried it and did'nt work, I waited too long to pull. I took the brush I had in the side to see how it works. No problem now. Just a simple hook system is all.

Here's another pic so someone else may have some reference at a later time

Passes the pin once pulled towards you.
