Small inline filters, advice?

Gang, I use a Rotovac Ranger. It has a clever little laundry bag on the inlet side to trap lint and whatnot. I really HATE messing with it at the end of each job and it occurs to me that if I put an inline filter just in front of the machine, it would save me a bunch of hassle.

Now then: the Devastator filter is a big, maybe too big item and it is expensive. But how about a smaller, less expensive filter like this Mytee? Anyone using an external inline filter for a portable? I'd sure like some helpful advice.

Here is the Mytee: https://www.mytee.com/products/f200-lint-hog-8/

We use the hydro force inline filter with the steel trap instead of the mesh sock with our portable. It does the job. truckmount_carpet_AC10_filter.jpg

We have 3-4 of them. They work fine, we use knee highs and toss them. Saves cleaning the screen all the time.

Dude, it's a fkn portable... You want to limit suction before the extractor also? You only have 2 vacuums, I'd just continue dealing with cleaning it out.. My Sandia extractor doesn't have a lint bag.. Crap just gets sucked into the tank and dumped into the toilet..

Man I have poly and staple fibers... Half a tank full of just lint with a rv360i..

You say you have a bag that I would guess somehow hooks to the intake port of your porty in the waste water area?
Maybe try using what we use in our Devastator filters, it is a five gallon paint strainers. You might be able to hook it with Velcro strap to secure it in place, I would give you a much larger bag to hold debris.
If money is the concern, I would go online and look for the pool filter, I believe they have the latch/clip style closing lid. The hydro has a screw on lid and I have heard it gets locked on and becomes almost impossible to unthread it.
If you go with a inline filter I would also use knee high pantyhose to make it filter more debris and make clean up a breeze.
Hope this helps.

Well see Nate, it has an automatic pump out. The thing only holds a couple of gallons before the pump ejects waste water. So it has to filter the fuzzy waste as it comes in. Then you are left with a big hairy sockful of crap, wrapped around the inlet tube. It is a weird design and effective, except I have to handle the sock and it is nasty.

So yeah, I want it filtered before entering the vacuum chamber so I don't have to soak my hands in the filth.

Just get the Mytee lint hog and be done with it..
Hopefully you only use 2inch hose and wand. The Myee has less restrictions in flow then the hydroforce and a lower price point then the devistator.
Use the panty hose along with the metal filter for better protection for your auto-pump out motor.

I doubt the mytee could handle the incredible heat and vacuum of the Ranger.

Mine was collapsing more often than a Bob Foster ran bulletin board..

We use it on the vortex and mytee ETM with no problem.
John must have sold you a defective one--maybe on purpose :shifty: .

So yeah, I want it filtered before entering the vacuum chamber so I don't have to soak my hands in the filth.

I have been searching for a solution to this for a long time now.

Everything in-line is "full" sized, and too big in my opinion.

I put the idea of a changeable filter medium/mechanism incorporated into a porty vac inlet (where it should be) out there a few times, as I know it would be a big hit, but it has yet to be done.

A nice medium sized filter housing incorporated to a vac inlet on a full-sized machine would be great, like
Mytee does with it's Airhog.

I have always said that a porty filter should be accessible without having to dive inside.

Most success I have had is with using a stocking/knee-high over the inlet from the outside by turning on only one vac and letting it be sucked half way in and then stretching the end around the barb and then fastening the hose right over it.

Most are thin enough so that they do not interfere with connecting your hose.

Most common problem with this is that as solids are collected in the stocking, they will compact to form a heavy debris ball at the end that will pull the stocking tight and reduce it's surface area, and leave it violently thrashing around under the vacuum forces, sometimes even causing the end to break.

When I get a chance, I want to try attaching a stack float cage (without ball) to the inside end of the inlet, and find a perfect length stocking and hope it will serve as a rigid cage for the stocking to form against and stabilize it.

Yup, pain in the ass it seems, but most likely as good as it is going to get until a manufacturer comes up with something new.

Goomer-- he wants a filter outside of the waste tank.. his goal is to protect the auto pump out motor.

True, but it is accessible from the outside, which is half the battle.

Only way to be completely outside is by using something in-line, which there are no smaller options other than the big'uns.

I will make a shortened hose dedicated to the Mytee (per Papa John) and leave the factory filter in place as a secondary. If the cap is prone to seizing up, a bit of vaseline will help. All the waterline o-rings get that anyhow, it is just one more little item.

You know, I really see how just trotting a waterline and recovery hose into the house would be simpler.

On an urelated note, the CFX head puts out a LOT of warm air. I wonder if I can convert the output to run an HVLP spray gun!
Because the van needs a coat of paint, see?

Well, it cost me $10 more than a Mytee, but I bought a Hydro-filter from my chemical pimp. Support your local supplier and all that, right? Robert at Dixie Supply also hooked me up with 2"-1 1/2" slip fittings to connect the filter to my hoses.

I made a short pigtail piece so it rests on the floor.

Today I vacuumed with Kirby, edged with a backpack (because I am a premium Coastie!) and extracted with the 360i.

I pulled a cat-sized wad of hair out of the Hydro-filter and NOTHING made it through to the cursed Sock of Shame. Nothing. It would have choked the vacuum diffuser tube and filled the Sock.

This was a grungey carpet, not overly filthy but I really wondered how it would look when I was done. It looks new, other than an orange spot.

You other porty hacks who are lurking, you need to get a 360i, use quality cleaner like Saiger Free & Clear and get yourself an inline filter.
